HPV 5 years with new abnormal pap

Posted by shianne @shianne, Dec 1, 2022

I am a 23 year old that has had a positive High risk HPV screen for the last 5 years. This year was the first time low grade squamous cells were found. I have a cervical polyp (or at least did latest ultrasound did not mention it). Also have a ovarian cyst the size of a lime. My providers are suggesting to wait for biopsy due to my age. Why does my age matter? My paternal grandmother had cervical cancer, I am having pelvic pain and have for over a year, and have a polyp. Should I see a Mayo provider to get more information?

@shianne Oh, that's so terrible that you living with pelvic pain especially with the history of your grandmother. How long does your doctor expect you to wait for biopsy? I would want to know why I am experiencing pain and wondering if it's the ovarian cyst that is causing the pain or something else. We aren't medical professionals here at Mayo Clinic Connect so I cannot answer your question about your age and your symptoms and why a biopsy isn't ordered by your providers.

If you want to contact Mayo Clinic for a second opinion you can ask your provider to refer you or you can go to the link yourself. Here is the link:

I got told to wait a year. I have surgery 12/20 to remove cyst, so I am hoping that they do a scrape or biopsy during surgery. Chances are they won't, but I am pushing for it.

@shianne The cyst will be biopsied as any tissue removed will go to the lab and pathology for examination and diagnosis. Yes, perhaps you could continue "pushing" for more during that procedure.
