UTI and Kidney Function

Posted by ih60 @ih60, Nov 29, 2022

Is there a correlation between recurrent UTI and kidney function? Got off antibiotics a week ago and the UTI seems to be lingering. The past couple of days I’ve had foamy urine. I understand that to be proteins in urine, and may indicate kidney problems. Any comments and help would be greatly appreciated.

@ih60 Sometimes when we have a UTI, the course of antibiotics used needs to be longer than other times. Sometimes the cause of the UTI needs a different medication. For me, a UTI usually has a 2 week course of antibiotics, and often a culture of the urine to make sure the correct medication is being used. It's not "one size fits all". Either way, having to take antibiotics can disrupt our system, and it is often recommended that we include probiotics to help our digestive track stay on course, too.

As for foamy urine, there can be a couple of reasons for that. The urgency and force of the urine stream can cause bubbles or foamy urine. Personally, if it is just the last few days, and goes away, I would not be concerned. If it persists, it may be something to look into. Here is what Mayo Clinic has to say about all this:

Does this help ease your mind? Do you have relief from your UTI at this time?

Thank you Ginger. It’s always reassuring to hearing other people’s direct experiences. For the past 6 months I had 2 rounds of UTI. The doctor prescribed a mild antibiotics the first time, but sent the urine sample to a lab. She called me after a week and said I had two strands of bacteria and her prescribed antibiotics only works for one of the two. But my symptoms were abated and she thought i should be okay. Then my UTI came back and this time she prescribed a different antibiotics. But she only gave me 7 days. I started to feel somewhat better after 6 days. Now it’s back. So I’m thinking the original problem was never completely fixed. My concern is that if not dealt with the problem could affect my kidneys - which could cause the foamy urine - like proteins in the urine. I made an appointment with my doctor for this week and I will see what she says.

@ih60 I tend to agree with your thoughts the original infection was never completely cleared up! I hope the doctor will give you the correct medications this week.

Will you let me know what they say?
