UTI and cystoscopy

Posted by monigue @monigue, Jun 24, 2022

After
Straggling with recurrent UTI for a couple years, being on all kind of antibiotics, follow all of the precautions and recommendations and taking the holistic approach, I eventually have seen Urology doctor .
Without any discussion ,just based on the requisition from family doctor and on the urine test, ( that show bacteria and resistance to some antibiotics ) have scheduled cystoscopy procedure, that I am very reluctant to do at my older age.
Of course, frequent urinating with burning sensation and broken nights, 🤧isn’t pleasant !!
But I have learned of some cystoscopy side effect including potential infection .
And that the procedure can’t be done while UTI is present !!
I still have it with antibiotic.!
Plus I haven’t got a chance to tell him that I am breast cancer patient on tamoxifen, that is increasing the chance of having UTI .
My questions are :
Is Cystoscopy only the test procedure?
Besides the checking the bladder & uteri track for other issues, any treatment for UTI prevention can be done during the procedure??.
And if none- the outcome will be -back on antibiotics?? Wishes circle or what ???
Any reply with procedure experience greatly appreciated!! Thank you

Hi @monigue, you're quite right that it is confusing. A cystoscopy is used to help determine the cause of frequent urinary tract infections. However, cytoscopy isn't generally recommended while one has an active urinary tract infection (UTI).

Cytoscopy is not the only test procedure. This article from Mayo Clinic also lists the following diagnostic tests available:
- Analyzing a urine sample.
- Growing urinary tract bacteria in a lab.
- Creating images of your urinary tract (ultrasound, CT or MRI).
- Using a scope (cystoscopy) to see inside your bladder.

Thank you Colleen for the quick reply.
I have done numbers of urine and blood tests before the antibiotics has been prescribed.
If the others tests as CT , MRI can create the images, why than to do the invasive procedure .
Any invasive procedures in my age might have the bigger risk for complication and for side effects!
My urine and blood tests don't
show illnesses, kidney is functioning properly , I do not have any vaginal discharge or any pain , except frequent and very uncomfortable urination .
The bacteria in urine became resistant to antibiotics and
untreated UTI will destroy the kidney.
Therefore, I wander, if the cystoscopy procedure not only the test, but also is the kind of treatment.
Is anybody got rid of bacteria after the cystoscopy procedure had been done ??
🙏 you

I am follow up my post a few days ago.
The cystoscopy is done painlessly in a few minutes !! It isn’t treatment but diagnostic test!
Urology doctor doesn’t reveal kidney or bladder diseases.
It is lower urinary tract infection that should be treated !!
What was new for me, it was his recommendation to have an Epsom ( magnesia) salt bath 🛀 and have the ultimate part heat flow dry.
Recommended Utiva supplement and have prescribed antibiotic for 7 days only!
I hope it works!!!

Iam glad it is confined to the bladder. I am a 76 year old women with a complicated bladder infection that is caused by the Enterococcus Faecalis bacteria. It is very resistant to most antibiotics. My bladder infections in the past have been caused by E.Coli. I haven't heard of anyone with this strain of bacteria.
