Iron Deficiency- absorption

Posted by a4alicat @a4alicat, Jun 26, 2022

My name is Alison and I had gastric bypass in 2001. I am 59 years old. My highest weight was 285. I lost down to 170. I have gained and lost through the years. I now weigh 220 and starting to work on it again. I had iron and anemia issues for several years. My sister had the same surgery and had iron transfusions.

Over the years I have noticed absorption is an issue I need to be conscious of in all aspects of medications and supplements. The two things which have helped me in terms of my iron is in being vigilant in taking my b12 shots and an iron supplement called hema-plex. I have better results when I take a capsule rather than a tablet or soft gel. Liquid is always best for me but in this case I just disliked the taste too much.
In March I had a hip replacement and asked for liquid antibiotic. I have recovered beautifully.
My sister and I both have avoided anemia for many years. I think the supplement has contributed.
I would do the gastric bypass surgery again without a doubt.
I think the discussion of what you can personally absorb and the form is a good discussion with the doctor.

Welcome @a4alicat (Alison). Fellow members @roch @aprilarlady and @nova1976 were just talking about absorption and iron deficiency in another discussion and may have some thoughts and experience to add.

It sounds like you are managing your iron levels well and have successfully avoided anemia. Congrats on the successful hip replacement. What is your inspiration for starting to work on reducing the weight again? That new hip might cheer you on, right? Are you fully mobile again?

I am motivated by the ability to move without pain and appreciative of what it means. I worked with the physical therapist to build strength in the hip I have not used and focused on correcting my gait. After losing weight you have to think about not waddling and swinging your arms too much. I also realize the danger of my excess weight

Welcome @saiwan. Have you had gastric bypass surgery?

I've had Iron deficiency also Once a year, I need iron transfusion (hemefene)
i was told that because my ileocecal valve was removed, the piece of bowel that absorbs iron and b12 was also removed due to blockage caused by adhesions. A small price to pay to be thin good luck

Thank you @colleenyoung
I haven't had surgery. What is it for? How is it done? If you could elaborate on it, I would appreciate it

You posted your question in the Bariatric Surgery & Weight Loss group, so I wanted to clarify if you were in the wrong group or not. I suggest posting your question in the Digestive Health group here https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/digestive-gastrointestinal-problems/ to connect with other patients dealing with low iron issues and gut health. I had my bypass in 2004 and I too have had to have iron infusions over the past couple years. I weighed 265 and weigh 175 now. I have managed to keep off most of it with the help of TOPS, Take off pounds sensibly. They are an internation group and in most places. I need th accountability that comes with weekly weigh ins and meetings. Since the bypass my iron has always been on the low side but only anemic over the last few years. They are checking me now to see if I have any bleeding going on. Colonoscopy and endoscopy November 15th, oh boy! I had an infusion in September last tear and need another one September this year. I have started taking a supplement again to help so we will see how it goes.

Are you taking the required iron replacements for gastric bypass patients?

The Obesity Society and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery recommend a dose of 195 mg non-heme iron (sulfate, fumarate, or gluconate) per day for bariatric surgery patients. Here is also a very informative link with guidelines for iron intake after GBS:
