Can anyone help. I am a migraine sufferer. Can the Imitrex type drugs cause rebound headaches. The pharmascist said no, but I read different elsewhere. Thank You all

Imitrex never helped me. My wonderful dr. at the Mayo prescribed me nortriptylene for my migraines. It helped immensely. i now have fewer headaches and they don't reach the severity of a migraine and they don't last several days like they used to. I went from several migraines per week to about 3 per month.

After 10 years of being afraid to try Imitrex, I tried it in Feburary 2012. Never mind the uncomfortable mild side effects, they were bearable, but the next day the headache was back. So I take it again. Nest day headache is back. I decide to just deal with it because for 10 years, once a month I have a horiffic migraine ror 3 to 4 days, then it's over. Well not this time. The migraine just does not go away. It's not full blown painfull as usual, but it's there and I am misrable. I deal with this for 2 months, till the neurologist appointment. First of all, this guy is not familiar with migraine at all and wants me to take anti-depressants, and Maxalt. I do online research on the anti-depressant and it warns a strong relationship to suicide. Well don't you want to just kill yourself anyway when the migraine is attacking your life ? So, I do not fill that perscription. But I do get the Maxalt. That stuff has same result as Imitrex. More research for hour and days. I settle on taking magnesium citrate -- 2 tablespoons in a large glass of water in the morning, and 1 T in late afternoon. After 2 weeks I notice a small reduction of the constant pain. Last week I added Vitamin B6 and B12 daily at breakfast. Now it is 3 weeks later since starting the Magnesium, and one week of b vitamins, and I am positive that I am is less pain. I will continue these. I am on a waiting list to be seen at Mayo for these migraines, I am told not to expect an appointment until July 2012 at the earliest. I will try and hold on till then.
I hope this information about my experience will help someone, or maybe someone else has tried this and has had some relief and will share about it.

I TAKE IMITREX, USUALLY HALF OF THE PILL AND LAY DOWN TRY TO THINK POSITIVE THOUGHTS. AS FAR AS MAGNESIUM, MOST PEOPLE ARE LOW AND ALSO LOW IN D3. TRY TAKING B6 AT BEDTIME , B12 DURING THE DAY. IMITREX DOES WORK FOR ME, IF I CATCH THE MIGRAINE COMING ON I TAKE 2 EXCEDREN. I DO BELIEVE WE ARE ALL DEFICIENT IN VITAMINS, TOO MANY PROCESSED FOODS ETC. TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM CHINESE FOODS THEY CONTAIN AN INGREDIENT THAT CAN BRING ON MIGRAINES. I TAKE CYMBALTA FOR DEPRESSION AND FOR THE FIBROMYALGIA. I TRIED MAXALT AND IT DIDN'T WORK. INITREX AND CAFERGOT(I THINK THATS THE NAME ITS BEEN ALONG TIME SINCE I TOOK IT) ARE THE ONLY THING THAT HELPED ME. COLD PACKS HELP ALSO ON THE NECK AND FOREHEAD. GOOD LUCK

I am 46yr and have had migraines since I was 16, I have taken everything that has been available. The imitrex was a lifesaver for me when it was first on the market (as an injection originally) and it worked for about 3 years and then I guess my body became immune to it? I see a headache specialist and nothing works again, I do take daily topamax for preventative and an antidepressant, paxil, and currently receive botox injections in my skull every 3 months. It helps some, but still am down about 10-12 days a month.

My mother suffered with migraines all her life and I guess I inherited it from her but my doctor a hematologist / oncologist recommended amitriptilene. The frequency for any headache is almost zero. I take it every day near bedtime. You might run that by your dr. since some drugs don't mix well with others. I hope you get some relief. I swear by it now after almost 6 yrs. Good luck and hope you can get relief.

I have had migraine for 30 years. My dr. has me on Inderal Time Released 120mg. This hs really been very effective for me. Also, I take Zomig or Imitrex, I have for many years...and never have experienced "rebound" headaches. This combination works for me.

I have had migraines chronically--3-4 a week for 14 years. Imitrex works if I take it at right at the beginning but i take it with naproxan. I do not have side effects. If for some reason I didn't get it in time I add a few more drugs with tylenol, caffiene, etc--powerful and can kick it. I am now receiving botox. The frequency is reduced. I only had 3 migraines in august. I also take topamax. However eating right is essential and limiting stress. I bought a juicer several years ago; used it then ignored it. Now I started using it again but including jalapeno and ginger with the other vegetables. I can tell a difference. I also eat food of course.
