Macula hole, macula pucker

Posted by ninajeanne @ninajeanne, Apr 23, 2012

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the community and I am hoping someone out there has some insight to share with me. I was just diagnosed with macula hole in my right eye and macula pucker in my left. I am scared out of my mind. Has anyone experienced either of these two syndromes and what advice to you have for me?
Thank you and all take good care, Ninajeanne

ninajeanne, I have had macular hole surgery and while the lying face down for two weeks is a challange, I'm happy to report my eyesight was restored.

thank you, grandma Dee. Can you offer me any suggestions on how you handled the face down position. Did you lose much of your vision before surgery?
Anything info you can provide me will be a great help.

Ninajeanne, Mine happened very suddenly. Lost vision in center of eye. Its hard for me to explain in writing about the face down bit. ( 81 years old) I sent for an invention that helped. If you give me your phone # I will call you and explain.
Best Wishes

Hi Grandma Dee, my hole hasn't totally broken through yet. Unfortunately, it may be within the next 6 months. Hope you get that phone and I hope your health stays good. Ninajeanne

Hello ninajeanne, I have a macular pucker and am just living with it right now. I study botanical illustration and yes, it does interfere with close detailed work. Fortunately I do not have to make a living at it. The operation is daunting to me. My pucker has not changed for 8 years now. However, find a good doctor, keep a positive attitude, eye surgery today is state of the art. I just noticed your phone number and you are in the Boston area. My doctor is in Portland Maine and you might like to look him up. He is brilliant. Dr. Mark Balles at The Retina Center of Maine. (207) 773-3937 195 Fore River Parkway, Suite 480, Portland, ME
It will be worth the effort to see him. I wish you all the best. Sarah

Thank you, Sarah. I too have decided to live with my macular pucker. I just went to the doctor, and like you, it appears to have stabilized. He does not want to see me for another year for either my pucker or my pre-macular hole. It is reassuring to know you are 8 years out and going strong. Although, there is a 98% rate with the surgery, it terrifies me. Let's hope we both never need to find out. I wish you the best. Thank you for your doctor's name. I will keep it in my back pocket. Good, happy that it has stabilized. Next time you are at the Dr ask if you can see the films of your pucker. I saw mine and was amazed. It's a wonder any line is straight. Take care. Sarah

Has anyone had the surgery with Dr. Raymond Iezzi Jr in Rochester? He claims you do not have to do the 14 day face down for recovery?
