Hydronephrosis following live kidney transplant

My son went for his 4 month postop live kidney transplant visit and an ultrasound done for his kidney bx to check for rejection showed moderate hydronephrosis. He has no signs or symptoms of rejection. The hydronephrosis will be followed with ultrasound in a few months unless he develops worse labs. Anyone out there have any experience with hydronephosis post up kidney transplant?

It is nice to meet you via Connect. Congrats on your son's kidney transplant! 😊 Did the doctor mention seeing any blockage between the kidney and bladder, prostate, kidney stone, etc? It's my understanding that hydronephrosis is normally caused by a blockage or narrowing, is that what they told you. Did they add an antibiotic to your son's medications or do they anticipate that the inflammation and backed up urine in the kidney will resolve on it's own in a few months?

I had my kidney transplant in May 2015. In May 2016, I had a routine one year kidney biopsy that was aborted as they found my kidney transplant had hydronephrosis. I had no symptoms and my labs were great. I will always be thankful for that standard one year ultrasound as part of a biopsy as who knows if my kidney would have developed damage over time from the hydronephrosis. My hydronephrosis was caused by my having a “flabby bladder” that allowed urine to backup into the kidney. I’ve been on tamsulosin since then, which has taken care of the problem.
I wish your son well on his kidney transplant adventures in life. Sometimes there are challenges but our transplant teams want out success with our transplants.

Excellent information regarding the identification of your hydronephrosis! It sounds like they caught it during the preliminary ultrasound which is awesome. I was happy to hear that it was quickly diagnosed and could be resolved with a pill. You are definitely correct about out transplant teams looking out for us! You are welcome. My son’s nephrologist and surgeon are just following the hydronephrosis found as an incidental finding. They will act if his kidney fxn deteriorates. Hope to hear from any other recipients that had hydronephrosis.
