Bladder sensation loss & retrograde ejaculation post colon surgery

Posted by huskerhowy @huskerhowy, Aug 4, 2022

A month ago I had a sigmoid colon resection due to diverticulitis. After I left the recovery room to my room i told the nurse my bladder was full that my foley cath was clogged. (i've worked in surgery for 18 years) She fought me on the fact that its a sensation from the cathater. I informed her i'm aware of this. But this was my bladder that was full and hurting. She finally flushed the cathater and my bladder emptied 2 bags of urine.
I now have no sensation that I have to urinate. It's just discomfort in the abdomin. I also have retrograde ejaulation and pain in my right testicle. The urologist told me I need to wait 6 months for the problem to resolve but also stated it's a mystery on why this is happening. Has anyone experienced this? I need advice and help can't keep just setting an alarm every 2 hours to urinate.

Hello @huskerhowy and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Your lack of sensation seems to me could have something to do with nerve damage. Has any doctor mentioned this as one potential cause?

As for the retrograde ejaculation, do you believe this to be connected to your loss of urinary sensation? Did they happen at about the same time?

Yes they both happened right after surgery. They did a cystoscopy prior to the colon surgery to identify the Ureter. Have had difficulty urinating once the Foley catheter is as removed same with the retrograde ejauclation
