Clostridium difficile (Cdiff) and worried about weight loss

Posted by 5chances @5chances, Nov 25, 2020

I have cdiff and just finished 10 days of vancomycin. I’m down to 99lbs. I’m feeling better but very worried about the weight. Suggestions? What about starting back on vitamins?

I too experienced weight loss with my infection and even post infection I still lost weight. Now my weight seems stabilizing but cannot out on any weight that I lost back on. I am struggling with weight gain and was told this will take time. I am taking vitamin D and B12. I still take S.Boulardii and probiotics after 3 months of stopping the antibiotic. I am still experiencing 2 to 3 BM’s per day mostly in the morning and not that formed and funny Colors cannot turn brown. Anybody experienced this loose stool even after CDiff?

I had C Diff in May and a second a few weeks later. I’m having real difficulties putting on weight although I’m eating very healthily and taking probiotics. Please help!

I had C Diff mid May then a recurrence a few weeks later. I’m feeling better now but although I’m eating well and sensibly I can’t seem to put on the weight I lost. I’d so appreciate some advice. Thank you.

Hello I too developed cdiff back in 2020 and had a recurrence. It will take time to put the weight back on it took me over a year and a half and now I gained and trying to loose it back. Hang in there it will get easier and you will put this behind you. Good luck!

Hello,
I am replying from almost 10 months ago. I did get retested last fall and it was negative. However, my BMs have never been the same . They have never gone back to what they were before all of this. It is very concerning yet if I continue to worry my anxiety gets the better of me. It seems in the past, I was like most people and would put on weight pretty easily. Thankfully my weight has stabilized but I lose it much faster than I ever remember from before for no apparent reason except that my one BM a day is a lot, even after a year. And since my BMs are never normal I was diagnosed with IBD. It’s not the frequency at all, it is the volume and they are just not normal. The doctor knows all this but no one knows why…I assume my insides got messed up for life. I do not know what else to think. I use probiotics, eat better, drink teas, and attempt to not give in to the anxiety but it is a real struggle. I also clean with bleach a lot more than I ever did before and wash my hands too much probably. Lastly, I am very grateful I was negative after retesting. That is something to be so grateful for and I have to always remind myself to be positive. I hope all those that were kind enough to respond a while ago are doing okay!

Hang in there it will get better. My BM took over a year to regulate. Keep taking the probiotic and try maybe S. Boulardii for few month it will help and eat fiber. One of the doctor I saw asked me to try Metamucil seems it helps. Drink lots of water and stay away from refined sugar at all costs. I am still gluten free amd dairy free now slowly introducing multigrain bread seems ok so far. Your BM will regulate but it will take time. Good luck!

Thank you so much. I didn’t realise it would be a problem. I am eating healthily and taking probiotics etc etc, then when I weighed myself I was the same weight as I’d started four weeks ago. I was really emotionally upset so thank you for your encouragement. I really appreciate it. x x

It will get better and you will put all this behind you. I developed a huge anxiety over cdiff and felt really down and depressed for more than a year. Things will regulate give it time and trust yourself. You will gain weight again but it will take time. Ask away if you have any others questions. We are all here to help each other’s.

Thank you again, I am still finding my weight an issue, although my doctor said the blood tests were encouraging, but the fact that I had pneumonia back in April and C Diff throughout May, and still have the bug according to my stool test a few weeks ago, he says he has not expected me to put on weight. I am eating as much as I can, but I also have IBS so have to eat little and often….it is discouraging that I cannot yet see my weight improving and am wondering how long it will take? Every day I hope to see an improvement but I seem to be stuck. I’m getting very depressed about it. I am 78, and my GP said older people find it harder to put on weight owing to muscle loss which may be true but doesn’t really help. Thank you again so much for your encouragement and wisdom. Thank you for this. How long did it take you before you were able to put back some weight.? I caught C Diff in May and had another accurance two weeks after finishing the antibiotic. It’s now July. I had a stool test recently and the C Diff is still in my gut. Does its presence stop weight gain? I’m anxious about it because I’m trying my best to eat well etc but not getting anywhere as my weight hasn’t improved at all.
