I'm having trouble with Nausea While Eating: Anyone else?

Posted by sassydottie @sassydottie, Jun 10, 2022

I’ve been experiencing nausea while I try to eat lately. Just looking at the food, that over production of saliva starts. And then the nausea.
Anyone else?

@sassydottie

Zofran helps a little. What’s so odd about this is that it only happens in the morning. (Not pregnant)
What has your nausea like? Was it linked to anything?

Nothing definitive, but most likely tapering off benzodiazepine. If I can make suggestions, or if the Zofran stops working (like it did for me), please let me know. I have lots of experience, unfortunately!

I too have nausea on a daily basis due to dilated liver and pancreatic ducts. I have been prescribed Phenergen, which I find to be helpful.

I have lots of experience with nausea also, @frances007 . If the phenergan stops working and you would like options, just let me know. Good luck with it. Mine was not easy.

Thank you. The phenergan works to some degree, and perhaps better than zofran, which has its own set of side effects. Phenergan does make me quite sleepy, but maybe that is not such a bad thing at this point.

Hi @colleenyoung. As you already know, am in Stage IV CKD, having gone from Stage V and dialysis to Stage IV and no dialysis with good medical management and by my designing and following a vegetarian renal diet.

I also have Type II diabetes, COPD, CHF, Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, major clinical depression and recently diagnosed with gastroparesis. Gastric emptying study revealed it takes 3 hours for my stomach to empty instead of two. I started a GP diet as well as I could and still try to follow my vegetarian renal diet and diabetic diet with slight success since there is some conflict among dietary recommendations for these diseases.

After that procedure I was on clear liquids and soft foods but was discharged home still so weak I had to have home health assistance for a month (After-that-procedure-I-was-on-clear-liquids-and-soft-foods-but-was-discharged-home-still-so-weak-I-had-to-have-home-health-assistance-for-a-month-1.pdf)

Hi @kamama94, there is no limit to your tenacity, ingenuity and dedication to your health. I'm so impressed that you have designed a diet that improved your kidney function and is keeping you off dialysis at the moment.

I can hear that disappointment in your writing that you are now facing new challenges, not the least of which is emptying and gastroparesis. You will find discussions about gastroparesis in the Digestive Health group. Here are a couple of discussions to help you connect with other members.

- What can I do when in a gastroparesis flare? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/gastroparesis-9/

Here is a video from Madelynn Strong, clinical dietitian at Mayo Clinic, recommends some strategies and foods that may help speed up gastric emptying.

I have my fingers crossed that these foods that help gastroparesis are not contraindicataed with kidney disease and/or diabetes. Such a juggling act.

I too have chronic nausea due to dilated liver and pacreatic ducts. I take phenergan, which works well for me and does not cause the usual side effects of Zofran, like constipation. Eating is a chore for me, and I am now down to 97 pounds, a 25 pound weight loss since April 2022. This Friday I am finally having a MCRP so that the good doctor can further assess my condition that he has been "watching" for 2 years npw.
In any event, eating small meals throughout the day has proven helpful to me. Try eating what you like. For a while I was eating a lot of ice cream in an attempt to gain weight, now just the sight of it makes me feel sick.
Best of luck.
