gut function after stopping nicotine caffeine and alcohol

Posted by engrav @engrav, Jun 22, 2022

80 years old. Stopped nicotine caffeine alcohol cold turkey Jan 10, 2022.

Ok for a time but at about 4 months started diarrhea and gas.

Have done primary care doc history and exam, blood and urine tests, stool immune assay for blood, CT of abdomen, all negative.

Now doing hi fiber, low gas forming, low FODMAP diet.

What is the effect on the gut of stopping decades of nicotine, caffeine and alcohol?
Any quick fix to diarrhea and gas?

I'm not a physician, but I wouldn't think that stopping those things would give you diarrhea and gas. It's excellent that you stopped them! Maybe you're taking some new medication or vitamin supplement? Taking too much iron for example could cause diarrhea. (or pomegranate juice can cause it too because of the iron in it) So, I think you should investigate what you're eating or ingesting and see how that affects it. Another possibility, maybe you eat milk products but have became lactose intolerant? It can develop even if you didn't have it earlier. Good luck!

thanks

nicotine and coffee are laxatives and thought maybe after decades of use of these laxatives bowel is troubled without a laxative, then if sluggish, bacteria have time to make the gas, then with gas comes diarrhea

but you are correct, could be diet
since pipe smoking is a finger fiddling habit I replaced it with peanuts; maybe the peanuts did me in, obviously have stopped the peanuts

I think am slowly improving

now have real sympathy for people with bloating/gas

@engrav, a big thumbs up on stopping nicotine caffeine and alcohol! It just so happens all three negatively impact thiamine which might have become deficient leading to some of the symptoms your experiencing. Magnesium is needed to activate thiamine and as the krispin link shows nicotine caffeine and alcohol cause loss of magnesium! Review this information and consult with your health care professional before using any supplement.

Thanks for hypothesis
I need ideas

Blood Mg is hi normal
Plus take 100mg Mg per day for PVCs
Does this rule out this idea?

I see that too much magnesium can also cause diarrhea. Saw somewhere that magnesium glycinate may be easier on the stomach, so you could try that and see if things improve.
I suggest you ask your GP doctor and review everything you're taking and eating.

@engrav, magnesium taurate may be the form you need for PVCs. Check it out.

have seen GP and reviewed diet; only thing we found was that I started shelling eating peanuts to replace the fiddling with pipe and coffee; peanuts does show up on lotsa web pages as a problem for some people so stopped the peanuts
