Traveling with an Ostomy

Posted by susan_f @susanbfoster, May 31, 2022

Hi all,

I've had my ostomy for 20 years now, and have done a lot of traveling. I know that travel can be a big unknown when you first have an ostomy. I'm going to share my tips and tricks in the June 7th Ostomy Support Zoom. I'll cover planning, packing, traveling, and going to the beach.

The Ostomy Support Zoom details are here: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/event/ostomy-support-group-120/

Hi @susanbfoster, How did your presentation go last week? What were some of the best question asked and your responses?

Hi @colleenyoung It went really well. There was a lot of discussion about traveling by airplane, and how to be prepared in case you needed to do an appliance change on the plane - which has never happened to me, btw, but which I'm always prepared for.

Some of the urostomates added some of their tips, including bringing an extra change of clothes because if they get a leak they would get wet. Which is good advice for anyone really - you don't have to have an ostomy to have a soda spilled on you!

Candy also added some advice for colostomates who irrigate (don't use water you wouldn't drink).
