Does the voice recover completely after antibiotic treatment?

Posted by fdixon63 @fdixon63, Jun 19, 2021

I finished my 3rd round of Tobi 11 days ago (three 28 day treatments over a 2 year period) because of recurring Pseudomonas A. When I lost my voice this time I did not panic because it happened during the previous treatments. This time the treatment was much more difficult with lots of strained coughing. I even went to the ER during week 3 because during the PM treatment I could not breath (twice) for maybe 8-10 seconds--scary. ER did not determine anything definitive. I sent a portal message to my pulmonary the next day and he said it sounded like a bronchospasm. That made sense. My voice still has not returned to normal. Is it possible that the throat can get so strained/irritated that it is a permanent situation or just take much longer. I had been nebbing 7% Sodium Chloride before the Tobi but now it is impossible to tolerate. I do well with the 3%. Any experienced thoughts are appreciated. Good news. No pathogen in sputum tested at the end of treatment.

It's been a while, but I had two rounds of inhaled Tobramycin and lost most of my voice. It recovered after about 3 weeks or so, but now I am much more sensitive to any irritation of throat/vocal cords (after over 3 years.)

The second piece, bronchospasm, is indeed very scary - I have experienced a few times, but knew what it was because a daughter has had it. Mine came from a specific inhaler, and the longer I used it, the more often it happened, so my pulmo changed me to another med. The opinion was that I had become sensitized to one of the propellants.

Thanks Sue. I'm still playing environmental detective to see if I can prevent another recurrence.

I had one 28 day round of tobramycin. I also had an issue with my voice becoming very hoarse but it did come back once I was done. Now my doctor wants me to take tobramycin for 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off until the 28 vile box is done. I immediately got the very hoarse throat. Any suggestions as to what to take to alleviate the voice issue? I just started to rinse with warm salt water and then take some Manuka Honey to sooth my throat. This is the 2nd day of this new regime and I am willing to try other options to help my voice.
Any help would be appreciated!

What you're doing should be helpful. Be sure to gargle as soon as you're finished your treatment--don't let the med "hang around" in your throat. Another thing to try is Throat Coat tea.

Thank you for the response and the helpful suggestions. I am about to go buy the Throat Coat tea.
I spent 5 days at the NJH being tested from early morning till end of the day, it was very worth while! I learned so much about my condition and the steps to try and live with the Pseudomonas Aeruginosa bacteria. My other issue is the continuous coughing at night when I go to bed. I now have the head raised up but I still cough so much that I can hardly sleep. I have prescription nose sprays and I don't eat later in the evening. I cough a lot during the day as well but that will wait for another post.
Has anyone dealt with this lack of sleep due to coughing?

It does not happen every night but when it does I just can't stop until I get up and do one of two things. I might try sucking on a peppermint candy or drink Throat Coat Tea with lemon and honey added.

A few things I try for night cough - late airway clearance, antihistamine before bed, get up as soon as coughing starts and bend from waist - seems to bring up a bunch of mucus, then a cup of tea and back to bed. I tried an elimination diet and figured out what foods make me worse - dairy after noon-1 pm, all sodas, for my husband it is tomato-based foods for dinner.
Hope one of the many suggestions you get will help.
