Vitamin D

Posted by lsittll @lsittll, Mar 6, 2022

I noticed in a previous discussion that @jakedduck mentioned that his anticonvulsants lowered his Vitamin D levels. Those of us women with osteoporosis should take extra Vitamin D then. @jakedduck may I ask what medications are you tai8hg?

Hi Laurie,
I believe you're taking zonisamide and not taking any of the major players of the meds that lower vit D if memory serves but forgot what else your on. However, many people that don't take seizure meds have low vit D so it may be okay but checking it never hurts. You may also want to ask your Neuro if taking B-Complex is necessary. One reason I mentioned that is because of vitamin B-9 (Folate) which helps produce normal red and white blood cells and helps them divide and helps produce DNA and other things.
To answer your question I currently take Carbatrol and Phenobarbital which are both enzyme inducing drugs that alter the way the body processes vitamin D.
Take care,
Jake

Hello Jake!

Thank you for responding. Hank you for your advice too. If I asked my PCP she'd probably refer me to an endocrinologist
to see if adding extra Vitamin D is needed in persons taking antiseizure drugs.( there is an endocrinologist there in the office so she can consult with him or her).

Thanks again.
