How do I get some sleep?

Posted by Suhcuddo @suhcuddo, Nov 23, 2011

For years now I've been getting real sleep every few days. Like now I've been up since two thirty this morning. I'm full of anger all the time, and for what I don't know. I have problems w/ pain,(mostly in my neck, and from severe rls), acid reflux to the point of wanting to throw up nightly and depression. It's gotta come from the lack of sleep. I've try'd all kinds of anti-depressants, talking about my problems w/ a theropist only makes things worse. I'm getting desperate. I don't want to become suicidal but I'm very close to the breaking point. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi. Iam very, very sorry to see your comment. I read it several times and I can honestly say...IT SUCKS BUT I,M RIGHT THERE WITH YOU!!!!!!! You gotta wonder what we did to deserve this crap.... Suhcuddo, all I can say at this point is hang in there and solve one problem at a time, You inspire me cause here I am with ONLY severe RLS and I have lost all hope. My nero Dr. threw his hands up since I,ve tried just about every crappy drug for this and only REQUIP. {large doses} somewhat controls the RLS. Your neck pain is maybe manageable????? , and the acid reflux 'SHOULD BE ABLE TO CONTROL", but what are you doing for your RLS?. I am not into social media and I,m a newbie at this forum,so please forgive my awkwardness.... Maybe some angel will see this and help us both with these ailments. I,ve been so healthy all my life, it,s so difficult and the Drs. that i have been to actually know less than me about RLS. You are in my thoughts and prayers and I feel that at the very least, you should know that I hear you and I LITTERALLY feel your pain...........David

I recently had the same problem w/ my Dr, and I've been seeing him for years! When I went to see him about the pain and everything keeping me from sleeping,
rather then look at the drugs I was currently on ( 3 of which had the same side effect ,mood changes) he automatically assumed I was going through a depressive mood and added more drugs to my list. I am currently in the market for a new Dr, I just don't understand why they don't listen to us?

I notice you have a beautiful cat. Does your cat sleep with you? If so you may want to try a night or two without the company. I have to close my bedroom door to keep my cat out or it will keep me up. I wish you the best.

try using an inexpensive neck brace, not too tight. it may just keep you head/neck still and take some pressure from the pain. worked for me, good luck.

I have had insomnia for about 1.5 months....sleeping very little. 1-2 hrs a night. It is torture. Am on Zoloft for about 1.8 months. I want to stop taking it. Always have taken a sleep pill, now I want to pratice CBT and try to correct my sleeping problem, but I have this fear that I am going to die from the large lack of sleep....or go crazy. Right now I am at work and sleeping is all I think about, becuase I am not getting much! Any suggestions.

I went through an awful bout of insomnia, high anxiety, and panic attacks a few years ago. It was the worst period of my life, hands down. I knew there had to be a solution, so I went for a free evaluation at my local mental health care hospital. They admitted me to an Intensive Outpatient Program the next day and I spent the following 5 weeks getting the treatment I needed. I suggest you work with a good therapist who specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or check out your local mental health resources. Most of them should give you a free assessment. If you happen to be in the Chicago area, I can highly recommend the program at the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital in Hoffman Estates, IL. Their program changed me life! I now sleep 8 hours almost every night and only take sleeping meds on occasion.

Start by going to your Doctor and asking. I'm sure if he(or she ) is a good one they'll know where to start.

Look up behavioral health hospitals or mental health hospitals for your area. Your Dr. may have a recommendation, too, although mine was clueless about anxiety disorder so you never can tell what kind of results you'll get from consulting an MD.

Another option is to contact your local NAMI chapter. It's the National Alliance on Mental Illness. They have trained volunteers to help support you through group therapy and surely at one of their free meetings they could suggest a good mental health facility. They usually hold their weekly meetings at local outpatient mental health clinics.

I hope this helps! I'm sorry for the pain and heartache you are facing. I know it is awful and I wish you the best of luck in creating a better and brighter future for yourself.

I know how you feel because I bearly gave them enough sleep to monitor in my sleep study. If you have not had one of these done I would do that first. I have been on something to sleep for years and now my Mayo doc is taking me down slowly off of both meds. I have to retrain myself to go to sleep and it is NOT easy. It is so frustrating for everyone else to be sleeping in the house and you are reading or writing or watching tv and next thing ya know the sun is rising. Hope you get some relief.

They put me on Zoloft and it seems to be helping some. I'm still having sleepless nights once or twice a week, but am more able to deal with it.
