Cytomegalovirus Post Transplant - New Drug

Posted by estrada53 @estrada53, Jan 6, 2022

The FDA has approved the use of Maribavir (Livtencity) to treat episodes of post transplant CMV for recipients 12 and up. This is an important advance for those who do not respond to typical anti-virals.

"Transplant recipients are at a much greater risk for complications and death when faced with a cytomegalovirus infection," John Farley, MD, director of FDA's Office of Infectious Diseases, said in a statement. "Today's approval helps meet a significant unmet medical need by providing a treatment option for this patient population."

Interestingly, recipients interviewed in my research project identified CMV overwhelmingly as the one issue they wished doctors would have discussed more thoroughly. Even recipients who accepted Hep C + hearts considered CMV to produce more severe health problems.

Here is the link to the article I found.

Interesting as you said for those who don't respond to the other treatments. For me tho the treatment I got 3 years ago now worked well and I haven't had a problem since. I find it interesting tho that it seems to affect some severely. For me I never had any symptoms and only found out thru testing. It's one of those areas that makes medicine probally frustrating as we all are different in how our bodies react to certain viruses and treatments. Thanks thou It'll keep it in mind as I talk with others.

So glad to hear you are well.
I just returned from Mayo for my year 5 evals. Doing great as well.
Dana, check with yoir coordinator as your appointments draw nearer. I was unable to have my left heart cath today. The hospital and clinic are above capacity and the pre-op, post-op, radiology rooms are all now fitted as patient rooms.
They cancelled my eye procedure as well. This protocol will be in place until next Friday but they are pushing back on all scheduled appointments and if the surge does not ebb, the cancellations will continue.
Stay healthy and God bless.

Congratulations 🍾🎉🎈on your four year anniversary, Dana! I’ve been sick too…thankfully tested negative as well. The stress of fearing I had Covid certainly hasn’t helped the healing process! Enjoy your warm weather, -3F here tonight!
