Osteoarthritis + kidney disease: Suggestions for chronic pain meds?

Posted by codered032 @codered032, Dec 30, 2021

I have osteoarthritis. I have had several joints replaced. I was diagnosed with MCD in 2019. My nephrologist thinks I should avoid all non-steroid anti inflammatory medications. Tylenol is not helping me and I have generalized chronic pain and fatigue. I had one visit with a pain management Dr who was only interested in injecting my lumbar disc. I couldn’t get him to understand that my pain involved multiple body areas, including my entire back. Needless to say we didn’t agree on a treatment plan. My PCP only suggested X-Strength Tylenol. Before the pandemic I exercised almost daily in a therapeutic pool, which was very helpful but with my suppressed immune system I avoid the gym. Can anyone suggest pain management treatment for osteoarthritis that does not involve NSAI?

Hi @codered032
You are referring to Minimal Change Disease, correct? Have you tried topical remedies like voltaren and daily stretching? What are you doing for activity now since you have to avoid the gym?

I had a hip replacement in July 2021. I am not as mobile as I should be. I know that I should increase my physical activity, but it limited by pain and stiffness.

My activity is due to arthritis not MCD. However I have noticed an increase in fatigue. Don’t know if it related to MCD or arthritis

I didn’t know you had a hip replacement! During your MCD treatment? Last I remember, you had found a new nephrologist and were impressed with their knowledge and care. What do they suggest?
I have severe arthritis in my R hip and back…. Likely a replacement candidate, but my severe osteoporosis and current MCD treatment have put that decision on the back burner. My nephrologist told me acetaminophen is the only safe pain reliever for me. 😫 All others are more apt to affect kidneys. Unfortunately, Tylenol has never worked for me. I got a prescription for physical therapy and went twice a week for a month to learn appropriate exercises . I found it valuable and despite discomfort I try to utilize what I learn as often as I can. I am signed up for osteoporosis PT starting the end of the week. I am slowly weaning off my prednisone relying entirely on CellCept to keep my podocytes in line so I’m sure more pain and discomfort will become the norm as my joints have to function with less steroid. Everything is a trade-off. I believe intermittent fatigue to be a fact of life and I just try to deal with it. I have poor sleep habits which contribute, but I also love a noon nap.
