Cancer found in gallbladder, possible spread to liver, now what?

Posted by steve90154 @steve90154, Dec 5, 2021

Hii,

My father is diagnosed with 2 polyps in gall bladder in a routine ultrasound size 2.5cm . He didn't had any symptoms. The doctor advised to remove the gall bladder and advised to get admitted. After the admission doctor did multiple scans including CT scan which showed "polyps with associated wall thickening and a suspicious area of extramural nodularity In the gall bladder neck Suspicious for Neoplastic Pathology. Dr said they will do the lap cholecystectonomy and send gall bladder for test in the middle of the surgery to find out if that is Cancer. And that came out Cancer and Dr extended the surgery and removed part of the liver with some tissues and the surgery is completed and the liver is sent for biopsy.
Please advise what are the chances the Cancer is spread to other parts and its been 2 days he is in ICU with some fever around 100.5.
Will he lead a normal life and How much is the life expectency according to his condition. He was fit and fine before admitting to the hospital. He just came for the gall bladder removal .

Please advise in detail.

Hello @steve90154 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Having your loved one go through all of this must be so difficult. It is great to see you reaching out and seeking connection with others.

You will notice I updated your title to allow for more people to join you based on their experience.

Are you able to be with your dad in the ICU? Have you been able to talk with his surgeon to learn if they were able to get all of the cancer from his liver and what the prognosis looks to be at this point?

Yes after 2 days in ICU they are shifting him to Bed. I had a word with the Surgeon he said they are waiting for the biopsy report which will come in 3 days till then they can't say anything. Report will decide weather Cancer was spread in the nodes they removed and liver sample they sent for the testing.

My father is feeling ok as of now they will give fluids to my father from today.

Hi Steve, I thought I would check in to see if you've learned anything new about your dad's gallbladder cancer.
I'm also tagging @pgf and @dougmcd who have experience with gallbladder cancer should you have questions.

Steve, what is the next step for your dad? Any treatment plan beyond surgery?

The biopsy report is still Pending and will take 3 more days. My father is discharged from the hospital and recovering at home. Everything depends upon the biopsy report How far the cancer is spread.

Hello
My wife had two different rounds of chemo to treat the cancer. She was Stage four. The chemo had no effect. The tumor tripled in size. The doctors told us there was nothing more to do so we went home and took care of her at home until she passed six weeks later. I wish my update was better but our journey was right months diagnosis to passing.
But. Don't give up until it's time.
