The Fear Factor

Posted by linh @linh, Aug 24, 2021

My new neighbors stir up my anxiety with their occasional domestic violence episodes. I have learned many successful techniques to deal with my anxiety, but become a bit paralyzed during & following the carrying on next door. I bunker down & emotional feel safest not stirring. I think if I don’t move I’m safer. Intellectual I know this is a poor coping mechanism.

Perhaps my fear is heightened today because I thought I heard a gun go off yesterday evening. This seemed related to a nearby park visitor, not these neighbors. How best does one get past the immediate fear factor?

This has been an issue for me at times and it is distressing. Noise canceling headphones may help. I look forward to ideas from others. 🙂

Thank you, I actually have a pair of those headphones in the garage, but never thought to use them for something along this line. I think I had originally made use of them following night shift work.

I have been encouraged to do mindful exercise during these stressful events. I’ll try this with the headphones on. Thanks again. - Linh

I have middle of the night anxiety attacks since my husband died over a year ago. I have found that on you tube there are some wonderful calming meditations. I use one for stomach distress in particular. Here is a quick one by this British accent speaking woman - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGzgR1O684g

She has many different meditations which I find are truly calming and reassuring. I hope you will take time to take a look at the varieties to see if any in particular will suit your situation.

Yes, I will listen right now, thank you. I have one of those angel-versaries coming up in a few days. One can use all the help they can get. Your kind suggestion is much appreciated.

@linh. My heart goes out to you. I recommend listening to some Dan Buglio videos posted on you tube. He talks about ways to deal with all sorts of things like pain, anxiety, etc. I’m in the very early stages of absorbing this information but I think if I keep listening and absorbing it will help. It may not be for you but know we are all here to support you!
