Caregiver to liver transplant recipient

Posted by chris13000 @chris13000, Aug 13, 2021

Hi, my husband had his liver transplant in 2016. I need to have MMR vaccine for work. I understand this is airborne and I'm very nervous with him being immune suppressed. Any feedback or recommendations is greatly appreciated.

Hi @chris13000, and welcome to the Transplants group. We have a lot of transplant caregivers here in the group and I look forward to introducing you to them. Before I do, I'd like to understand your question.

You are concerned about COVID and your husband getting infected. I understand that. Yes, the COVID-19 virus is airborne and highly infectious, especially with the delta variants and other variants yet to come. Vaccination is an important protection tool against getting COVID.

You are required to get the mRNA vaccine to return to work. That's a great advantage for protecting yourself and your husband.

Are you worried about getting vaccinated? Or are you worried about returning to work? Is you husband vaccinated?

Hi @colleenyoung, thank you for responding.
It's the MMR vaccine that I have to get for work...I understand it's airborne so I'm concerned about protecting my husband from me. I work from home, sleeping in the same bed, cooking his meals, preparing his meals things like that. Or am I overreacting? 😁

Oh gosh, I assumed MMR was a typo or a (not so) smartphone correction. Thanks for setting me straight. Since MMR vaccines are usually given as a childhood vaccination, I found this information regarding childhood liver transplant.
- Vaccinations Post-Liver Transplant https://www.chp.edu/our-services/transplant/liver/recovery/life-after/vaccinations
It states "The MMR vaccine is given to children, and transplant recipients do not need to avoid persons vaccinated with MMR."

Having said that, I understand your concern and commend you on your precaution. I think this is a question best answered by your husband's transplant team. Are you or is he able to contact a transplant coordinator through the patient portal or by phone?

Yes, I will contact them. I was just wondering if others had a similar experience. Thank you so much for the information. Happy that the Mayo Clinic has this portal. 🙂
