Posted by mikek206 @mikek206, Jul 23, 2021

I read An article a few years back saying...A university in California has produced a compound that stops Kidney progression in its Tracks...What Ever Happened to that..? Did some big Pharmacal Company buy it and put it on the shelf for Money...

@mikek206 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Gosh, that would be a wonderful thought, stopping kidney disease progression! I certainly understand your concern about pharmaceutical companies trying to head that development off "at the pass". Here's hoping others might recall this article, as I do not.

I am currently Stage 4, at 22% function. It's a daily chore to keep that up as high as possible, controlling blood pressure and stress, plus diet.

While we wait for others to chime in, are you willing to share your kidney disease journey with us?

I remember a mention of research out of California about an artificial kidney that is placed in a backpack for portability. II have located this article dated January 29, 2021 from UCLAHealth that says that "Dr. Kurtz estimates that his team needs another 18 months to refine the technology on the wearable artificial kidney and then will focus on the implantable artificial kidney."

@mikek206, This is quite an amazing and also complicated project. After reading this article, how would you feel about a wearable device?

Well, I would have to see it in action...Sounds better than going 3 times a week for dialysis. Bet some Pharmacal Company will buy it and put it on their back self...these companies are making much too much money to give it up without a fight...

Hi Mike, I'm not sure what article you may have read a while back. I know that researchers are working hard to find alternatives for kidney disease from prevention to slowing progression to an artificial kidney and regeneration. It's important to keep in mind that the media often reports on promising medical breakthroughs when the research is still in the early stages. It is likely that the study you read about in still being investigated.

Has your doctor or nephrologist talked to you about diet and lifestyle approaches to slowly the progression of kidney disease?

@johnbishop @mike206 Also, here is a meaty article from the National Library on Medicine https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6014699/

It appears the Compound AC1903 and TRPC5 are dealing with podocytes, an issue with FSGS patients. Not all kidney disease patients have this complication. It seems to me it would be critical to establish the exact cause of a patient's CKD in order to benefit from this therapy. Using my case as an example, my glomeruli [filtering components] are being shut down by collagen Type III building up within them. I have extremely high protein leak into my urine and blood as a result. I don't think this therapy of AC1903 would work, for me.

I applaud any advancements in treatment of CKD! We have often heard, "There is no cure for kidney disease." Even dialysis or transplant is simply a treatment, not a cure."
