Iron Depletion in Blood related to COVID?

Posted by stellm @stellm, Jun 11, 2021

Has there been any reports of iron depletion in the blood after receiving the Pfizer vaccine?

I'm not sure if getting the Moderna vaccine was the cause, but for the first time in my 71 year life my RBC count, just tested, is below the lowest low range. My husband's various blood levels also declined after the vaccine.

@maitri, @stellm & @trieste -
This is an interesting issue - I have a few questions for each of you, as we all look for answers about these new vaccines.

As I said in earlier posts, I have looked at both VAERS (the place to report reactions) and everything I could find through research, and this is a completely unreported issue to date. Additionally, my daughter a Covid health/triage nurse for a large health system has not heard of it either.

- Did you report the reaction where you received the vaccine or to your doc, so it could be recorded in VAERS?
- Were your low blood counts found as the result of your feeling ill after the vaccine, or during routine blood tests during other health care?
- Have the counts been repeated to see if they have improved?
- What did the doc have to say?
- Are you able to see your blood test results over time, to see if this is part of the normal fluctuations we all have?
- @trieste Did you or your husband have any other symptoms?

Sorry for the long list, but it certainly is curious that we have not seen any reports since Day 1, and would love to improve our knowledge of what is going on.
Thank you!
Sue

@trieste - Except for Astra Zeneca I still can't find anything definitive about a lower blood count after you were vaccinated with Moderna. I'm curious to know why you had your blood tested and also how much of a difference was there? Did your white blood cell count should have increased.

To answer your questions, there have been no other symptoms; the blood was tested as a pre-op exam for an unrelated minor matter. No, I never thought to mention this to any agency since it wasn't until I read here about others having suspicious blood test results that I became aware of this. My doc wasn't concerned since all other tests were fine.

Seems covid May have a relationship with low Iron , ferritin high RBC , etc. I had a normal blood panel in March of 2020 , I had Covid in July of 2020 , rather minor really. I had blood work again in March 2021 and boom all over the place , been seeing an oncologist etc. been looking for any relationship with Covid. I have never been anemic before and have never had any blood iron issues or oxygen issues. I took the vaccine as well Pfizer first shot in Jan 21 second March 1 21 , based on blood donations my hemoglobin was taking a dive starting in August 2020 At 18 , the oct it was 14 , December 13 , so it was crashing well before the vaccine, in Jan , no idea how long my iron has been low , iron was 11 and ferritin was 3 , on 4/6/21 , at this point the Dr. s can not explain why!!! I am 3 months into iron pills and a few other vitamins and making progress. 3 more months to see how we are doing. Just now I am starting to see some articles that indicate Covid and iron could have a relationship. This is the first time I’ve seen it tied to the vaccine but in the end we may be responding to the vaccine just like we did Covid. My second vaccine knocked me out for 24 hours. Very interested in any research related to Covid and iron problems not necessarily the vaccine.

With Covid-19, its treatment and aftereffects and now the vaccines, the old axiom "The more I learn, the less I know for sure" certainly seems to be true.

Thank you for posting your story it will be interesting to hear if anyone asking here about the Covid vaccines and low iron also had the virus. I'm an outdoor person in the summer, so will be headed out to do some chores before it rains, but I made myself a note to dive into the literature later and see what research I can find.

Was any of your other bloodwork abnormal in March?

Yes CBC was all over the place. It’s coming back in line now as my iron comes back.

I also donate blood regularly for years and never had low iron count for any screening. However, the last two donation attempts after receiving the Pfizer vaccine, my iron was too low to donate and I was turned away. The first time I was deferred, I was a bit shocked. And today, when I was deferred again, it made me thing think that the vaccine could have been the issue.
