Covid vaccine - does it prevent infection or prevent symptoms?

I'm confused about what the vaccine actually does. Will it prevent the virus from getting or staying in your body (ie: you becoming infected) or does the virus get in and stay (and you are infected) and the vaccine just prevents symptoms?

Vaccines, including all the Covid vaccines, do not infect you with the virus. Instead, they stimulate your body to recognize the virus and build immunity, called antibodies, so you do not get infected with the virus. The Covid vaccines are about 90% effective against getting Covid, and if you happen to get the virus, your case will be less serious.

Vaccines, including all the Covid vaccines, do not infect you with the virus. Instead, they stimulate your body to recognize the virus and build immunity, called antibodies, so you do not get infected with the virus. Hi Sue - thanks for the comment. I think you misunderstood. I know the covid vaccine will not cause an infection - my question is: will it prevent infection or just prevent symptoms?

Sorry I misunderstood, thw vaccine is 80+٪ to 99٪ effective at preventing infection, depending on the Covid variant.
