Anyone have experience with Buscopan and/or Pinaverium?

Posted by artist01 @artist01, Jun 10, 2021

I'm having difficulty with my IBD. My GI first prescribed Pinaverium but it caused dizziness so he next prescribed Buscopan, and after 10 days I've had a severe 40 hour bowel impaction. Doc wants me to stay with Buscopan, together with Metamusil and 1/2 dose Lax-a-Day. Must admit I'm feeling somewhat defeated, but hopeful this will work. Anyone with experience with either of those two prescriptions?

@lotsofpain @kimh and @horselover7216 have mentioned Buscopan (hyoscine butylbromide) in the past. I'm hoping they might have some experience to share with you @artist01.

According to this article from the NHS (https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/buscopan-hyoscine-butylbromide/), buscopan can cause constipation and shouldn't be taken if you "have a bowel blockage - symptoms include severe tummy pain and difficulty pooing, together with feeling or being sick (nausea or vomiting)".

Artist, are you taking Buscopan to deal with the cramps and pain? When and how often do you take it?

Spasms are a necessary part of of helping faeces to work their way through the system but sometimes the spasms become painful variety of reasons and Buscopan helps by reducing the severity of these spasms if you take too much Buscopan the cumulative effect is usually constipation because you have no means of ejecting faeces. Therefore if you already have a blockage or are already significantly constipated Buscopan is not the pill for you colofac reduces spasms in a different way and does not lead to constipation though moderation and not exceeding the recommended dose it's still advised. The recommended maximum dose Buscopan is 8 tablets in 24-hours no I have very taken more than 4 in 24-hours. I take colifac slow-release each day but only very occasionally take Buscopan

I don't take buscopan regularly. I take it to help with esophageal spasms. I hope this helps. I have never had an adverse reaction to it.

Also, if metamucil isn't working, maybe you could ask your doctor about PEG?

@colleenyoung Thankyou for responding to my post about Buscopan, Colleen. So far, both @kimh and @horselover7216 have responded, which is helpful and confirms what I've already researched on the medication. My current dose is 3 x 10mg Buscopan per day, together with 1 x 5.8 gram packet of Metamucil and 1/2 dose Lax-a-Day. The doc doesn't want to switch me to a further (3rd) prescription of an antispasmodic within a month, so hopes I can stay the course for now. The Buscopan was prescribed by my
GI while I was in the hospital with severe gastric problems this month. (Including, but not entirely because of, up to 7 or 8 small bm's per day, not necessarily diarrhea), caused by spasms. I will end this post for now, before I mysteriously lose it! Can add more later, if called upon. Laur
