Increased numbness with decreased humidity?

Posted by avmcbellar @avmcbellar, May 4, 2021

I noticed I experience more numbness during the summer when the AC is on. The temperature is kept 77-78 degrees which is comfortable for me. During the winter the temperatures do not drop outside to need a heating system so the humidity does not drop either. Does anyone else have a similar experience? I was wondering about neuropathy and people who live in low humidity climates like Arizona.

Hi Toni, Here's what I think may be an easy to understand and not too technical explanation of what may be happening that I found on this website - https://crtherapy.com/neuropathy-blog/why-do-neuropathy-symptoms-get-worse-when-it-rains/
"Actually, the neuropathy isn’t worse . . . it’s arthritis! You see, when it’s humid (the barometric pressure changes), the fluid in your bursas/joints, etc. expands, causing an immediate increase in the pressure in the joints/joint capsules. This increased pressure squeezes nerves. The nerves then start “firing” to let you know they are not happy!"

It kind of makes sense and there are other sites that may be more science based 🙂

Higher humidity does bother me but I can't tell that my numbness is any worse.

@johnbishop thanks for the information . In my case it developed immediately following my AVM and neuropathy. Never had the numbness issue prior. So very strange it would be caused by arthritis. Last winter I visited a colder state for a week. The numbness felt worse with the colder temperatures. I had a heater on so the humidity was low for a few days. Just curious. Something else to think about. Thanks again John.

John, I am a walking, talking, swelling, hurting, painful testimant to this concept! I should not be living in sunny, humid, lovely Florida. Heat gets me in many ways, but the humidity is a killer to breathing, arthritis, swelling, asthma, bronchitis, and so much more. I wasn't made for the humidity...NOR was I made for the cold. Cold is extremely painful for me, my joints and muscles and whole body.
I almost moved many years ago to Arizona to help my son with his breathing issues. Had I done that, I would have saved myself a lot of painful times as well.
One of the woulda', coulda', shoulda' times we have in our lives.
I'm loving Florida, just hurting! bless you, elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth @ess77 The humidity in Florida is indeed a difficult challenge. As you had said Florida is a lovely state with its sunny days and beautiful beaches. Hard to move away although the hurricanes and thunderstorms are a drawback. Folks living near or on the coast are more at risk for incurring damages from the hurricanes.
Have you been to Arizona? I never have travelled there but I will have the opportunity next year to experience its climate and wildlife. Luckily, I don’t have any joint pain or swelling to deal with. My pain is merely from my neuropathy so far. We do our best to move our bodies no matter how much we hurt. I remember an elderly neighbor(in his 70s) years ago who had told me he had arthritis badly all over his body but his daily exercise program was the only way to curb his pain. He was pretty good about it, always on the move. He even rode his bike and never used a car to get around. Wish you well for better days! Toni

Hello, Toni. I'm soooo jealous you have an Arizona trip planned. Oh, to be a fly on the window going with you. Guess I'd be blown off, tho, but I so want to go. That's no longer an option, but I do everything possible to make my life in Florida the best it can be. I walk as I can, I use the PT heated therapy pool for an hour 2X weekly, beginning again soon after having some procedures and tests.
Yes, exercise and moving. Sarcoid, chronic bronchitis, gastro issues, fibro, herniated lumbar, cervical and thoracic discs, aortic anuerysm, and whatever are keeping me home, but not down. I'm getting better and better, then a few steps back then better.....so, as you see, this isn't anything new to my body.

I'll keep going until everything gets too tired and stops. Love it!
Blessings in your journey. elizabeth

Good morning Elizabeth @ess77. I can empathize with the difficulties you face with your health day to day. We do what we can to keep going. I have issues with double vision which affects my balance. Looking down makes my eyes stressful to the point they burn. As a result, my motion sickness increases limiting my activities. It is so good to hear your positive attitude. Don’t give up hope with traveling. Technological advancements have made it possible to see places anyway. May be in the future we will be able to feel as well. I would definitely welcome you to be a fly on my wall. We(my husband and I) were hoping to travel this year but now listening to possible gas shortages due to the lack of drivers, we are postponing the trip till next year. Things should be better by then plus I will have had corrective eye surgery. I certainly don’t want to chance being stuck anywhere during our long trip with our RV. Three years ago we took our RV to Colorado to visit family. My aunt, in her 80s, enjoyed walking with a walker and swimming in a heated pool to help decrease her pain. Her daughters lived nearby and often took her to the pool or walked with her.
Along the way to Colorado we stopped in other states to see friends. It was a great way to travel by having our own home and watching out our window for wildlife.
In florida we have stayed overnight at several state parks to watch nature. We love it!
I am excited to visit our daughter in Arizona. I hope see remains in Arizona until our trip next year. You know how kids can be. Her job brought her there. Did your son eventually move to a healthier climate or does he live near you? Keep taking care of yourself! Wish you well. Toni

Hello, Toni. I enjoyed hearing about your RV travels w/your husband. What a lovely way to spend time with someone special and to see our fantastic country. I have seen many of my desires and plans and hopes for tomorrows float off into the clouds, gone and that's my life today. I'm ok with this. It's sad and too bad, but it is and I'm where I am and God is in control. No more fight or flight. Less anxiety, less stress, more acceptance and focusing on moving forward, in bright light and health.

My body has had a tough time for most of my life, but truth is I'm doing better by far today than a year ago and even better than many years ago. I have answers, have understanding and less pain now due to my work with the Mayo docs. And, due to the extra hard work I've done with my thinking, and learning really important concepts of cognitive thinking and central sensitization and mindfulness.....a good buzz word....but last night, after a day of breathing recovery, I listened to several wonderful musicians playing classical guitar, from youtube links sent to us by our own @johnbishop, dear man he is. I was in a different place with a smile, softness inside and peace. The breaths came easily, I felt deep peace and happiness. Thanks to John and talented folks sharing with us.

My Florida life is good. It's lovely in tropical paradise, with spanish moss swaying softly from the live oak outside my window, the birds, river, ocean I haven't seen in too long, and all of the natural beauty around. I'm lounging today....still in bed which I never do! But, today I do and am loving the pleasure.

Bless you, Toni and I hope you and your husband get out on the roads soon. I used to love the short 2-3 day trips to nearby venues....with my fiance who died in a car accident several years ago. We enjoyed the rides together, chatting and sharing and seeing new places. You don't have to take the long trip to Arizona....yet, but when you do I expect a lots of reports about all the fun times.

BTW: I share your double vision fun! So sorry you're experiencing that, too. But, it sounds like you may have some relief soon. I hope it goes well and your balance is resolved. I'm getting glasses soon, and hearing aids! Now, that is acceptance, eh? I'll have prisms that will hopefully allow me to see single sights looking forward, that will help in a lot of ways. Hearing aids and glasses are quality of life investments. I may run out of money, but I'll be able to see and hear!
Chat soon. elizabeth
