Gratitude Discussion Group

Posted by Debbra Williams, Alumna Mentor @debbraw, Nov 24, 2018

Hi everyone! Just before Thanksgiving @michellegraffradford posted a blog called Gratitude Changes Everything. She suggested three techniques to help incorporate gratitude into our daily lives:

  • Start the Day with Gratitude (before getting up think of three people you are grateful for)

  • Maintain a Gratitude Journal to record times when you are grateful

  • Count Blessings – not sheep! (Review the day and remember moments of gratitude)

Her blogpost was so inspiring that a lot of us decided we wanted to form a Gratitude Group to keep the attitude of gratitude going. The blogpost area is not an ideal space for a big discussion group so I am moving the discussion over here to the “Just Want to Talk” Group. Let’s use this space to share and discuss our Gratitude Journey. I’m going to suggest that we each try to take a minute from the day and post here what has made us feel thankful today. It can be as small as a stranger’s smile on the bus or as large as fulfilling a major life dream – or anywhere in between. We can also discuss how we are doing with the three techniques. Sometimes it is easier to form new habits with support from others.

Michelle's full blogpost is at the link below. You may want to review it or print it out to help get started!

I look forward to hearing from others in the Gratitude Group and to having others join us here! Thanks to those who already shared great stories. If you haven't yet, what gratitude will you share today?!

I’m sharing that I believe I’m finally moving forward and I have such gratitude for that! Before Clippers (BC) I loved to quilt and was quite good at it (if I do say so myself). But, I’ve been so stuck the past couple of years and can’t seem to do anything. Then I made the decision to give away all of my BC quilts!
I advertised in a neighborhood newspaper and had lots of interest. As I was giving them away, it occurred to me that I was really putting my old life behind me and getting a new start! I feel positive and ready to start on my AC life!

Congratulations, Becky. I'm sad, tho, I missed the chance to have one of your creations. What special gifts of yourself you gave to others. That's healing in itself, my friend. Bless you. Elizabeth

I’m grateful I’m losing a few pounds. Let me tell you kids this healthy eating can sure pack on the pounds fast.
I got up to a whopping 160 pounds but now I’m at 148 and on my way back to 140. Even under the best of circumstances I’m about as pathetic looking as they come so let them go back to saying “you look like your sick or dying.”

If anyone says you look like you're a sick or dying, tell them "I feel great and thank you for asking!"

Glad to hear of your weight loss @jakedduck1! You are not far from your goal so don’t give up. Well, it all depends on what you call a healthy diet. Perhaps you look sickly because your body is not used to healthy foods, lol. Give the diet time for you to see its benefits through your blood work.

I understand what you are saying. Losing weight has some great health benefits but when you look too much different from what you were before the weight loss people comment on the change.

I am grateful I will not see this view (I think) again until next winter. We here in Hoosierville were greeted with 31/2 inches of snow on April 21. Grateful to see the hummingbirds have returned even though they need hats and coats-STILL! Yes. there is a hummingbird feeder in the snow. Grateful insurance approved cervical rhizotomies since they only want to cover 2 a year. Since I choose to do so under a local (Yes, it hurts) the doctor only does one side at a time. The nerves regenerate in less than a year without a doubt. I have had this procedure twice before and under a local. Thankful I can do so. Also thankful to have my grandson back in my life. Helps more than anything else. Grateful I can still do some artwork although not for long periods of time. Grateful for the little things as they are big things to me.
@debbraw Thanks again for starting this discussion.

Annual orthopedic and neurological checkups went well. No damage was done to my neck or arm after taking a serious tumble a month ago. My Chiari and Syringomyelia is looking good. My right hand is looking good and performing well. Left my appointments with my battery recharged and knowing my doctors have my back as usual. My two doctors are the best!

I am grateful we were here to accommodate a friend who needed a place to stay at moment's notice. Then we were graced with my step-son visiting for the weekend. Both guests brought laughter, and great interaction.
