Orthopaedic Laser Post Shoulder Replacement

Posted by mwsa1945 @mwsa1945, Apr 13, 2021

My daughter is undergoing shoulder replacement surgery in early May and has asked about laser therapy pre and post surgery for pain management. I could only find ads online that of course were positive. Any practical or medical references or experience from this group? Thanks.

I need bilateral shoulder replacement but not in any hurry. If I tried laser therapy I'd make sure I had a bucket full of strong opioids on hand just in case in wasn't as effective as I would want.
Wishing your daughter good luck,
Jake

Thanks for the response. It reminds me of infrared but perhaps the penetration is better. I’ll keep researching.

Please keep us posted on laser therapy for pain. Have not found any relief three months out.

Good evening @mwsa1945. I have a few questions for you and some thoughts. Is the surgery for your daughter the result of trauma to her shoulder? Was your daughter's shoulder injury recent? I have had 4 shoulder surgeries including a reverse replacement. The subject of laser therapy pre and post-surgery was never mentioned so I am very interested.

I did find an advertisement similar to the one that you made a reference to. Did you verify the authenticity of the organization and the validity of the product that was being promoted? I am being protective because I, myself, was recently introduced to a phototherapy option for a skin condition and am currently receiving two treatments per week. I certainly did my homework before agreeing to the treatment. My dermatologist who has been helping me for several years made the referral.

What benefit is your daughter looking for from this therapy?

May you have contentment and ease.
Chris

You have had four shoulder surgeries. Do you have terrible pain? I do. I have a very tight band feeling around my shoulder and terrible burning sensation. Is this normal ?
13 weeks from surgery.

Thanks. I attached some info. It seems so far as I can tell there may/may not be beneficial as there are no valid scientific studies so far in my research. I’ll keep looking.

Good evening @martydav, Thanks for responding. I can honestly say I have no pain in the right shoulder now. I had lots of pain as we were going through the surgeries. First, it may be important to know that I fell down a mountain. My shoulder was dislocated and my elbow was broken in three places. 1st surgery was an attempt at a rotator cuff repair. My surgeon said it was the Grand Canyon of holes and he dd not think it would work. Well, it didn't and so he tried a cadaver graft. That didn't work either. Eventually, I had a reverse shoulder replacement. That actually was the least painful. It healed well and I did all the strength-building for my deltoid since I no longer had any rotator cuff.

Wouldn't you know that within a year or so I fell down the stairs and tore the rotator cuff in my left shoulder. My surgeon has successfully repaired it and so far so good.

You also asked about burning. I have a hard time knowing just what "burning means". I am sure I had a lot of it and very glad I have none now. My go-to relief was ice and more ice. Are you using an ice machine on your shoulder?

You mentioned a tight band feeling around your shoulder. Do you mean like a rubber band around your shoulder with your arm against your chest. Or is it a band around your shoulder while it is in an immobilizer?

Really want to see how I can help. Have you tried a medical cannabis topical? That also helps. Tell me when it starts and what you are using to control the pain. Let's see what we can do for you.

May you be free of inner and outer harm.

I feel like I have a belt around my bicep, and my arm feels extremely heavy to lift. Burning is my way of describing the pain. I broke my shoulder and my elbow. My elbow has lost a lot of motion.

Good evening @martydav. There can't be two of us with broken shoulders and elbows. Wow. Here I go with my funky questions again. What part of your shoulder was broken? Mine was dislocated out of the socket and the rotator cuffs were no more. No two surgeries are exactly alike.

I don't think you should be in that kind of pain 3 months post-surgery. Once the mobilizer came off, I got a purple cast. I sure didn't know they had colors. I should have known when I realized the other patients were young folks. Summer baseball or other activities were responsible in some way. No wonder they cheered when I came out with the purple.

Is there a special orthopedic clinic near you, a teaching hospital? Do you have a follow up appointment?

May you be healthy and protected.
Chris
