Hi, @yangedd - I wanted to add my welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. This information you've given on the symptoms you've experienced with borderline personality disorder (BPD) or EUPD – Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder – plus your tips on finding the right provider to assess you are very helpful.

I'm hoping that @bpd31mneedhelp @archangel @gkent @janechaz1 @jettab @cle64may09 @yin73 and others will return and share how they or their loved one are doing currently with BPD. @gailb and @johnbishop also may have some thoughts.

@yangedd - wondering what treatment you may have had for BPD and what might have helped you?

@lisalucier I actually see my Psychiatrist every two weeks, my mental health nurse drops by often and I'm in ongoing psychotherapy for a long time now. I have been on numerous medication since 2010 when my Mum's death from Colon Cancer saw my symptoms take a turn for the worse. I was prescribed Valium, Ativan, Stilnoct, Zimovane, Xanax, Haloperidol, Seroquel, Zyprexa, Zoloft, Lyrica, Chlorpromazine and a weekly Clopixol injection at different stages in the past eight years. I was on a cocktail of them because of my rage, self harm and my suicide attempts (In 2014 I ended up in Intensive Care after an overdose of Seroquel, Haloperidol and Zimovane. I woke three days later with a tube down my throat and caught pnuemonia on top of it all. I'm working very hard with my mental health team and things are improving drastically and I am off all those medications, although they did help at the time. I hope this answers your question,

Ed

Hi, @yangedd – I would like to add my welcome to Connect along with @lisalucier and other members. I think this must be the Mayo Clinic information on BPD that Lisa mentioned. The page also has a related video that may be helpful.

Thanks for the article on BPD management with the video, @johnbishop. I apologize the link was absent in my previous post. I've now added it there, and here it is, also, for reference, @yangedd: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/borderline-personality-disorder/symptoms-causes/syc-20370237

@yangedd, good to hear things are improving drastically. You've been through an awful lot with all the symptoms, the variety of different medications and spending time in intensive care.

I wanted to introduce you to @oprah - not the celebrity, but a fellow Connect member who has a diagnosis of BPD, intermittent explosive disorder and bipolar.

I also thought I'd invite @parus to join the conversation.

@johnbishop @lisalucier Thank you guys. The article on BPD is very interesting and as usual I recognize myself in it 100%. To be honest, I didn't even look it up after I was diagnosed. It took a while but once I did I slowly got a little understanding on things. It's the sometimes relapses of symptoms that can be tough and if that happens I end up feeling terrible and guilty that it's after happening because of all the work I've been putting in with my mental health team.

Just a quick question? I was just wondering has anyone with this diagnoses ever got a really bad Psychiatrist who wasn't understanding? My one was away on holidays not long ago and I had a temporary one in her place for two sessions. I have to say that I walked out of that office absolutely livid with anger. I know that some professionals don't even see this kind of diagnoses as an illness and this person actually called me dramatic, adding that I have one of my "episodes" and everyone follows me around with a prescription. I was flabbergasted to be honest. I admit that when I'm bad I can be dramatic but I felt two feet small when the prescription comment was made. I guess some people just don't understand that having BPD can be so tough. Thank God I never saw that person again and I've let my resentment go.

@lisalucier Thank you again. I look forward to @oprah and @parus joining the thread. Have a good morning,

Ed

I have not been diagnosed with BPD. I admire anyone with this diagnosis for working to improve.
I am sorry @yangedd about what happened with the doctor. I have dealt with those who believed my diagnosis was not real and did not even belong in their fat, blue manual. Hasn’t been an easy journey.
