A novel coronavirus is a new strain that has not been seen before in humans. SARS-Co-V2 is a novel virus, causing the disease COVID-19. Because COVID-19 is a new disease, much is still being learned about how it spreads and the severity of illness it causes.

On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Gregory Poland, infectious disease expert and head of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, explains the science behind how the virus makes people sick, and what the virus does to the body. Dr. Poland will also discuss the latest information on clinical trials and vaccine research to fight the disease outbreak.

Dr. Poland has served as a consultant for Merck & Co. Inc., Medicago Inc., GlaxoSmithKline plc, Sanofi Pasteur, Emergent BioSolutions Inc., Dynavax Technologies Corp., Genentech Inc., Eli Lilly and Co., Kentucky BioProcessing Inc. and Genevant Sciences Corp., and Janssen Pharmaceuticals Inc. He is a paid scientific adviser for Johnson & Johnson. Honoraria: Elsevier.

I enjoyed the podcast. I would like to mention that, along with all the recommendations about hand washing and social distancing, that maintaining a healthy diet in order to boost and keep your immune system up to par is also a necessary precaution. Diet doesn’t seemed to be mentioned in any news programs that I have seen about the virus. This is important for everyone whether you have underlying medical conditions or not. It’s not necessary to give up your favorite comfort foods or snacks but be mindful of what you eat. Food is medicine for the body.

We went to our local supermarket twice the week before last because we were out of meat. We thought that we had been transported to Venezuela or to a third world country. There was no meat, milk, eggs, butter or any other sustainable food to be had. Last week, we were able to buy one chicken. Thank goodness that it was a big one because I have been able to make six days of meals from it. We have a pound of shrimp in the freezer and I should be able to stretch that too. But there still are no eggs. As soon as the store opens at 7 AM, the lines around the store had been forming since 6. By the time we get there, the food is gone. So many people are hoarding!

Hi,
I went to our local Publix here in Florida this Monday and everything but paper products was on the shelves. It was about 10 am. It looked like they just restocked. Plenty of meat, chicken and fish. Very unlike the last time I went. I think it would be difficult to limit fresh meat and chicken and fish because how would they know the size of your family. They maybe should limit milk and eggs and butter though because you can always make a meal out of that. Some cleaning products were limited and there were signs on all the shelves and produce department with a polite reminder to take only what you need and think of others. Nope, it’s just like the hurricane mentality here....deplete all the batteries and flashlights and stock your freezer so you can be ready when the power goes out and you have no generator but you do have pounds of spoiled food.

Yes people are still hoarding because they think the apocalypse is coming. I know people are cleaning more but empty shelves of tissues and TP.?
And Publix is saying there will be no refunds to anyone because of the overbuying. Exchanges are okay. Good for them.

So when we should be staying home ,we have to go out to the store more often to see if they have restocked and then you have no choice but to stock up yourself.

Our nearest Publix is in The Villages in Florida. They are the ones who are hoarding all the meat, eggs and dairy products. My husband needs to find eggs somewhere soon, but we have given up hope of finding them anywhere near The Villages. We don’t live there so we need to find somewhere else to shop. I hate to go into the grocery stores every week. I think that I will stay in the car, but my husband can contact the virus and bring it home.

Are there any farm stands near you? There are some here that have refrigerators with dairy and eggs. Even some of the drugstores.....Target....Walmart .....can’t rely on Publix I guess.

Oh bummer...it’s our only chance of an excursion....yay , the grocery store!
My area is not as dense as some but I keep my eye on the news and so far so good. I could walk to my Publix though. Whew that’s a hike home in this weather now.

No farm stands. Maybe Walmart will have them.

Try 7-11 , or Circle K or any gas station that has an inside convenience store. Speedway and WaWa have large convenience stores.
