compass 16.9Being away from home for medical care can be an uncertain time filled with questions. Mayo Clinic offers free concierge services to all patients visiting Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The Concierge Service team provides:

  • Guidance with travel and lodging
  • Tourism information
  • Community resources
  • Personalized service

Chelsea Lockrem is a member of the Mayo Clinic Concierge Service team. Below, Chelsea answered questions about how her team provides unique resources and helps patients plan their visit to Mayo Clinic:

Q. What’s one thing you’d like people to know about Concierge Services?

A. Concierge Services provides so much information for patients, from lodging to the ins and outs of flying to Minnesota, to what’s going on in town while they are here, or how to plan a day trip. We’re here to make this trip as smooth as possible, so the person’s main focus can be on what they intended the trip to be: their health.

Q. What do you enjoy most about your job?

A. I enjoy helping people. Many people who have never been to Rochester think that it’s this huge city like Chicago, and it’s not. It really is a “big, small town” with a lot of super helpful and friendly people. I really enjoy informing people about how the Mayo experience works. It isn’t like you are booking a vacation, so there is a lot of valuable advice that our department can provide to patients when booking their travel.

Q. What’s your favorite moment or story from your work in Concierge Services?

A. My favorite moments come from the patients who are so overwhelmed when they call that they don’t know where to start. By the end of the conversation, they are so thankful for the information and advice I provided them. Many people ask if I can accept a tip, and I say, “No, but you can fill out a comment card. Those are the best tips we can receive!”

I am having a surgical consult with a Dr Nogorney this Tuesday. I am worried that he will choose to do surgery while there and I have a child who would want to be there we live about 11 hours away. Just wondering how long after surgical consult would a surgery be scheduled if Dr decides that's the way to proceed?

Oh Mandy!

Do I understand how you feel. I was diagnosed with lung cancer and schedule for surgery 24 hours later. I had a son in South America! He flew in just in time. My husband flew unjust 20 hours before the surgery. Whew. Then another son flew in days after the surgery. Our other two kids, called daily. They followed up in person weeks after, which was really theist support for me.

Looking at hind site, it is freaking scary when your surgeon tells you they are scheduling surgery 'Now"! If you trust your doctors, and
you know they are doing the best for your quality of life...isn't that most important?

I have a feeling you will make the right decision. This was not funny at the time, but it is now...I overslept my "show" time. The nurse
called me very early to remind me! I apologized, saying: "I am a commercial airline are member, I never miss my flight, and I cannot
believe I am about to miss surgery!" I could hear the kindness in her voice when she said, "I understand, It's ok, you have been through a lot, it will be fine...when can you get here?" I put on my clothes and showed up in time. My husband and son were there for me!

As it turned out that was best for my long term recovery. With cell phones, and great communication everyone kept in contact. A somewhat similar time lapse situation recently happened with my husband; a recreational vehicle accident happened in a heartbeat.
I was at the scene. The support of our family and friends that followed has been extremely important in his recovery. He did not remember the chain of events immediately following the accident. So wench family showed up, later and one by one, it gave great
quality of time for everyone to be together.

I hope this helps, I have a feeling you are in great hands. I wish you well in your decision and/or procedure. So don't put off today...you know that saying, right?

Let's stay connected.
You deserve a cyber hug!
