teaching hospitals, research centers, that specialize in hearing loss

Posted by awilst @awilst, Mar 23, 2021

I live in central fl (orlando fl) , & have been going to VA for audiology/ hearing aids for years.
I recently have received a 2nd,(replacement pair, for 1st pair of phonaks I returned), Both the phonaks & now resounds ( new hearing aids) are not providing me with speech perception.
Is there a teaching hospital/ research center near me that has in-depth hearing research capability that might help better define & resolve my hearing defect? 2nd opinion?
The fundamental question I ask myself is , how come I can hear the audio/speech well enough from a headset/ear phones. Like tv ears, or sony am fm radio headset, but lousy using my hearing aids??? (and from hearing aid accessories). I realize hearing environment not same,
going on my 2nd second trial of hearing aids (resounds this time), audiologist seems ok, VA seems to have resources, so whats the problem.

awilst @awilst Hi! I am surprised to see no responses to your post, as of now! Your questions strikes me as a very good one, and one the someone could answer! I would have started by posing the question to the audiologist which it seems you didn't. As to who, besides the audiologist, I would think there are others on this list who would have a reply.

I encourage you to find a HLAA Chapter in Florida. There are several of them. HLAA folks are well informed about resources in their area. I like to hope that you might received some solid information from them. VA has a very good reputation for fitting hearing aids. It's important to understand, though, that the people who fit hearing aids are not all equal in their skills. Have you asked a different 'fitter' these questions? Chapters are listed on the website of The Hearing Loss Assn. of America (HLAA): http://www.hearingloss.org I hope this helps you find answers.

Hi everyone - This is Eloise with the Sun City Center HLAA Chapter in FL. https://www.hlaascc.com/ I am originally from WI but moved here to FL in 2019. We have 14 chapter here but only 4 of them are functioning and that is because of the pandemic. Many of our members do not have the capacity or ability to use technology or have broadband to use internet/zoom or Google Meet type meetings. Zooming fatigue has also been found to be an inhibitor for our audiences to give up on attending many of our meetings. Right now, I am busy with many different projects that have been funded by our Chapter's Sponsor - SCC Men's Club. I continue to provide the Clear Windowed Mask Campaign, the Portable Loop demonstration for our businesses, the Hospital Kit for our healthcare providers, distributing the Communication Cards for our Police, EMT and Paramedics, contacting our State Legislators on the Amendments for Hearing Aids (Hearing Aid Act) and working with our Veterans in the community. I am a member of our South Hillsborough Chamber of Commerce and Ambassadors and educate our area about our organization in any way possible. I also work to advocate for the deaf/hard of hearing with our state's Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing - FCCDHH - while I am not on their Board - I attend their quarterly meetings and provide them with information as a Representative of the HLAA Chapter. If you all want information that reflects what you want and need - please go to our FL State Chapter website where Debbe Hagner has it updated and I help her keep it updated. She is the President of the FCCDHH and also is a Chapter Leader of several FL chapters here. Debbe and I converse daily. https://www.hla-fl.org/ Debbe also is our Zoom facilitator and can be found on this website. Check us out - and join us for any and all of our meetings. Thank you.

Everyone is different. The fitter matters, but so does the brand of hearing instrument. My own personal experience is similar to yours. I needed one brand to have it compatible for streaming with my cochlear implant processor, but found that brand did not work well for me after trying 5 versions of it. I stuck with Widex when I purchased my last hearing aid. I will need a new one in a year or so, and will go back to try that compatible brand again as they do get updated. Most others in this situation find the compatible brand works well. Just pointing out that it can be a very individual thing. I've been using hearing aids since the mid 70s, so have plenty of experience.

very preliminary report. today met with va audiologist. explained my replacement resounds were not helping me. she gave me a devise made by phonak, called COMFORT DUETTE. its not a hearing aid, its a personal hearing device. gadget clips on belt, has wired headphone, or wired buds
well , I can hear much much better with this $150 buck device, that ever could with hearing aid. time will tell. but 1st impression , wow.

A hearing aid is only as good as the hearing professional fitting it. You can spend $10,000.00 on a pair of aids and have annoying issues attempting to hear. Sounds like you need to go back to the VA audiologist and have them tweaked, run some hearing tests again or go elsewhere.Personal Hearing devices are harmful in most cases because they are not programed to your specific hearing gain and not fitted properly. Did the audiologist try to connect your ReSounds to that Phonak Comfort Duette device with a neckloop that would allow you to use the telecoils that should be in the ReSound aids, rather than with a headset? You might be surprised at how well that works. The key to telecoil use is that it eliminates all background noise and focuses totally on what's coming in the microphone on the Comfort Duette device. Not sure why your ReSound aids are not working well. It is true that proper fitting by the person who sells you a hearing aid is vital to your success using it.
