Hello, I was wondering if products with fragrances damage the skin when using it long term? Such as fragrances sunscreens? Thank you

Hi @dmai98 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect You pose a great question. I think that some fragranced products can do damage. There has been a lot of talk and research surrounding this topic.

Mayo Clinic does have a "Skin safe app" that helps patients and consumers but smart products for your skin. Have you seen this before?
Here is the article on it that has all the information and where you can find it. - https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/mayo-clinic-minute-skinsafe-app-website-skin-care-products-nielsen/

Are you currently using anything other than sunscreen that you are concerned about?

Good morning @dmai98 Welcome to Connect. Thanks, @amandaburett for the welcome.

The fragrance is frequently a suspect and quite often the culprit in skin allergens. There are two categories...Fragrance I and Fragrance II. These lists are available from your dermatologist. They compose 122 pages of "skin safe" products for both fragrances and fragrance masks (products that are used to mask or coverup unwanted fragrances in products).

The categories include everything that you might have contact with, from your laundry detergent to your eye makeup. There is a patch or strip test that can be used to determine which fragrances have antagonists that cause reactions of atopic dermatitis and other skin diagnoses.

Have you had a strip or patch test? I have just completed the testing and am replacing products. I also use sheets with silver in them and anti-bacterial elements.

What sunscreens are you using now? What reactions do you have? Do you resort to scratching and then see a red rash? Don't worry...we all have the habit of scratching. There are also very effective prescription ointments that work well when you have an outbreak.

When I see a little more information from you about your current skin problem...I may be able to be more helpful.

May you be free of suffering and the causes of suffering.
Chris

Most people can use fragrances safely for years without issues. Yet repetitive use of certain high risk allergens will create an allergy. I was fine until middle age. Initially in my 50's I became allergic to many allergens and one was cinnamon. Cinnamic is a common ingredient in products besides foods and is often in lotions and shampoos. No more cinnamon rolls or toast for me. Offending grooming products had to be tossed or given away. I had started getting a rash from cinnamic in lotion and also in shampoo. This type of eczema is called Allergic Contact Dermatitis, ACD. Just as Chris mentioned you need to be patch tested if you suspect fragrance allergy issues. Look up the 5 Day Extended Patch Test, the True Test Kit is a common test kit. Now in my 70's if I simply walk past a lavender plant in bloom I get an immediate headache, this just started a year ago so I dug out all my lavender in my herb garden bed and gave it away to gardening friends. So sad. i used to make sachets out of the dried flowers and stems.
If I had avoided high risk fragrance allergens perhaps I would never have become allergic.
