Veteran and VA does not know what is wrong with Skin and infection

Posted by wireuup @wireuup, Dec 20, 2020

A few months ago October 2020, I had some sort of large cyst infection on my right outer calf of leg.. Urgent care in October lanced and drained it and gave me an anti-biotic.. The area over these last 2 months never healed and in fact broke other skin lessions around the area.. During this time my skin in my left leg calf broke out with bumps and odd skin feeling. Both areas on both legs do not even feel like skin.. Then rashes broke out around my stomach similar to the legs on the left and right side of my stomach... ( Note: I have not been able to have a regular bowl movement for weeks) it is odd that these conditions seems to develop on both the left and right sides of the body..
I am suffering with severe itching in all these areas and they are scaly.

I will add that almost a year ago.. 2 type large cysts developed on my upper right and left side thigh area very close to the groin after running wires under trailers on the ground at a construction project that the workers claimed they had found hundreds of drug needles laying around.. The ER had to lance and drain those and I had to go back 2 more times to ER to have them opened and drained again.
They said they suspected possible Sars.
The VA on this recent event has no idea..

I am getting desperate because the initial infection on my outer right calf not only hurts and looks like something out of a zombie movie but is not healing and the anti-biotics ( Doxycycline) they gave me are not working..

I am hoping if anyone would have any answers that Mayo experts would know..

@wireuup has a dermatologist done a punch biopsy of an infected area?

Hi @wireuup, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, an online community where patients and caregivers share their experiences, find support and exchange information with others. It sounds like you are looking for a professional opinion from medical experts at Mayo Clinic. Have you been back to the VA since October? What treatment are you currently on?

Nobody had suggested a dermatologist at the VA.
The PA at the VA said she thinks it is oily skin.
She said the urgent care PA that lanced the infected area on the right calf removed the shell that was formed on the inside but I talked to that urgent care PA and she said they are only allowed to lance and drain it only.
My primary care PA at the VA just says if it gets worse to go to the ER.. It is already worse.

Is this something a dermatologist can determine?

I have been back at the VA a couple weeks ago. Dec 2nd.
I would love to see a Mayo Clinic expert but I do not think they will provide compensation.. They allow me to choose Tri-care for out of VA services..

It just devastating that the military used to have the greatest medical doctors and now it has been reduced to primary care assistants that do not seem able to properly determine the cause of medical issues.

They prescribe a cream or an anti-biotic and send us on our way.

I would like to add from my last reply.. They did a blood and urine lab and have said all my tests are normal.

@wireuup. I would at least try a reputable dermatologist. They did a punch biopsy on me after 2 years of me seeing other specialists and I was diagnosed with lichen planus. Which goes in and out of remission and covers my entire body and inside my mouth (very painful to have anything inside my mouth when it flares).

?, How is your immune system? Is it possible that you have picked up some micro bacterium ?

The VA did blood and Urine lab on December 2nd.. They said all readings and levels are normal. They gave me an antibiotic ( Doxycycline) but it does seem to do anything. That is my right outer calf of leg currently after nearly 2 months since it was lanced and drained. Now I have areas around my stomach on both sides and my left leg breaking out with strange scale like bumps and a discoloration across my stomach area.. The itching feeling is off the charts bad all over these areas.

Have you tried to see an infectious disease specialist? Good luck.
