Pedialyte for the control of seizures?

Posted by Carnation @carnation, Nov 10, 2020

do any epileptics take pedialyte from their drs in regards to increase the Electrolytes to control the seizures?

Thanks. it's okay they're not controlled. I've seen some Good neurologists over the years but I haven't been to a Special Epilepsy Center. I would Love-to go to Mayo Clinic if I was closer to them.

Where is there a special Epilepsy Center?

@kanedenmk - Epilepsy Centers are usually connected with a hospital's Department of Neurology. I cannot name any specific ones, but I know children and adults have gone to one. Epilepsy unfortunately is fairly common. I don't believe that vitamins alone will treat seizures.
It is hard to guess what what the clinic found out about your granddaughter's health.

Not from a dr, but this is similar to what I found on my own. When I first started having seizures I would crave sports drinks (Gatorade/Powerade, not Pedialyte, but similar) after one. I got to the point where I drink them pretty regularly as a preventative measure and try to keep one close by in case I start having auras or other signs that a seizure might be coming.
It did not completely prevent seizures though.

@traverde Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It sounds like you have found sport drinks to be helpful as a preventative measure for seizures. May I ask if there are any other preventative measures you find helpful in preventing seizures?

I'm curious if you have kept track of your seizures.

Do your auras/focal aware/simple partial seizures (whatever term you prefer, always progress to another type of seizure or did you occasionally just have an aura?
Have you had auras that never progressed to other seizures?
If your seizures always do progress have you ever had a Gatorade that prevented the seizure progression? Has anyone ever witnessed your seizures after a Gatorade to see if the seizure is less severe?
What type of seizures do you have?
Are all your auras the same or similar?
Just my own point of view but I would think symptoms from any electrolyte abnormalities would show up well before any seizure activity.
Have you discussed this win your Neurologist?
Take care,
Jake
