Were you infected with e coli? How did you find out? What symptoms? What treatment did you take? Thanks so much

@hopeful33250 @imatine I had a blood culture done. I was surprised how quickly I got my results. I was in ER from about midnight to 3:00 AM. During that time blood was drawn for the culture. Then they sent me home. Just after lunch, they called me and told me I had to come back to be admitted to the hospital. They ran several tests and never found the cause. I had to have 15 infusions of antibiotics. I have not had problems with E coli since.

Could I ask a question related to my collagenous colitis? I have been running a low grade fever every afternoon/evening for some time with this. It would disappear when I was on budesonide, but when we stopped that, it was back. Since July-August. By low grade I mean between 99.5 and up to (once) 100.7. Mostly it's 99.5-99.8 or 100. It comes in the afternoon, often goes through the early evening and then leaves later. Has anyone else had this kind of fever? One of the medical people I've seen thought it might be due to inflammation, but mostly they just note it down, seeming not to know what it means. I find it oddly debilitating -- it makes me feel lethargic and weak.

Hello @elizabeth1944,

I can understand your concern about this persistent low-grade fever. You say that your doctor is noting it but doesn't know the reason. I'm wondering what type of specialist you are seeing now?

Have you considered a second opinion?

@elizabeth1944 - Hi! I also had collagenous colitis and took budesonide. I don’t recall having fevers. Your doctor might very well be correct- the inflammation can cause the fever. Budesonide is anti inflammatory- the disease calms down- fever is gone. However, when you have fever, I would ask the doctor to order some tests to be on the safe side. Blood tests, urine tests.

Thank you for your responses! I was seeing a digestive health practice here in Durango, but (long story) their PA does most of the doctoring, while the one remaining doctor does colonoscopies, etc. They have not been very good. And I cannot believe I stuck it out with them for so long.
I have a telemedicine appointment with Mayo in late December, and until then am working with my internal medicine doctor, and she is speaking with another GI specialist NOT in that practice who she says is really good. We hope to come up with some plans to work on until the Mayo appointment. It has been a very long haul -- but you all know about that, I'm sure!

@elizabeth1944 Hi again,

There have been times when I have stayed with a less than ideal medical practice before I made the break. I'm glad that you are doing it now. So good to hear about your telemedicine appointment with Mayo and also that your doctor is looking for some more help for you. It is so great to have some plans in place.

I hope you get some answers in the near future. Will you post again and let me know how you are doing?

The telemedicine appointment has been changed to November 18 from December 29 -- and very, very soon! I'm extremely glad & grateful because all medical practitioners are so busy right now. And I will certainly let everyone know about what comes out of the appointment. Thanks for asking!
