Increased Risk of Stroke with PMR?

Posted by layla7511 @layla7511, Nov 1, 2020

My rheumatologist mentioned an increased risk of stroke with PMR. She usually asks me at my visits if I’ve had any symptoms of a stroke. It causes me lots of stress and anxiety. I’m 56 and was diagnosed 2 years ago.

@karinaph, I think turmeric helps keep my PMR at bay and helps with inflammation. That said, I would always run a supplement by my doctor or a pharmacist if I was taking other medications just to make sure there aren't any adverse interactions. Here's some information from Mayo Clinic that you may find helpful.

John how much turmeric do you take? I have started my first relapse. I purchased the Dr.Wahls book and have started her diet. I am back on 20 mg. of prednisone. I was on 8mg. Needless to say very disappointed. I had company Christmas and got outside in cold to much. To much stress. I have been taking 1000mg for 6 months of turmeric. Any other suggestions to keep from having another relapse? Thanks, Sue

@123suew, I take 1 tbsp daily of Qunol Liquid Turmeric which is 1000mg. Sorry to hear your PMR flared up. I think the turmeric helps with inflammation but I don't think it's going to do much if your PMR is active but that's just my non medical opinion. I think diet does play a big part and will help keep PMR at bay once it goes into remission and you are off of prednisone. I think stress and over exertion can make it worse. Have you seen this article from Medical News Today from 2018? It offers some suggestions that might help.

Thank you so much for information and I will keep at the diet. Your story gives me hope! Thanks Sue

This post is now almost 2 years old, but this 2011 study #22057203 on pubmed did show a correlation between PMR and stroke. PMR patients were twice as likely to have a stroke when compared to control group.

Thanks John. I have had PMR since March 2021 when I was crippled with this disease. Managing OK with prednisone and dietary restrictions. I know well now that when I eat the wrong foods I’ll suffer the next day. Currently on 7 mg after starting on 15. How long have you been in remission?

I've been in remission since mid 2018 from my last occurrence of PMR. The first occurrence was in 2007 and I wasn't able to taper off of prednisone for 3-1/2 years in mid 2010. Then it went into remission until 2016 before it reared it's ugly head again. There is another discussion on tapering you may want to view here:

Like you I found out that watching what I eat helped me a lot with my second round of PMR. I really didn't put 2 and 2 together until I had a few other conditions and started doing more research on what changes I could make to help relieve the symptoms.
