Solutions: Live Transcribe reset and Zoom captions

Posted by imallears @imallears, Sep 30, 2020

Hello,

I know there were a lot of discussions about and dissatisfaction with Live Transcribe. I have found in the last several months that this app does give the “App Off-line “ message even though I am signed into whatever network is available. Today, at the doctors office everything was fine in the check in and waiting room until I got inside the office . Then it went offline. I have found that by simply turning wi fi off and then on again it seems to reset and then I am back online. This has happened several times when it never use to happen before. For me, this is a fix and might be for someone else. Remember how we used to unplug an appliance and plug it back in and then it worked again?

Goggle says it does not store any conversations on its servers. There was a concern from someone about sending data to advertisers.

Another thing I don’t do is turn on Accessibility because of the floating microphone which just gets in the way. It does not affect anything I do with this app . I am still using the same Samsung S7 .

I have “attended” zoom meetings and placed my phone upright near my iPad and am able to capture almost every word that is spoken as long as the speaker Is using a microphone.

I don’t know if this Samsung has the most powerful mic of all the newer models but I am still amazed at the sound quality and will continue use to use this older version until the phone goes kaput.

Healthy hearing to all

I would like to know about live transcribe. Is it only for doctors offices?

Have found it works in many other places also but even then who is ever doing the transcribing can get things messed up or when more than one person is talking or there is background noise

I tried Live Transcribe for technical meetings and found that it only increased my level of confusion between what I thought I had heard and seen and what Live Transcribe reported a bit afterwards. Further, since I live in a very rural area, most meeting places here do not even have WiFi, or, if they do, it doesn't work for Live Transcribe. I took it to a doc appt. in the big metro area (pre Covid) and was disappointed to learn that it only sort of worked in the reception area, not in the treatment room, which is why I had hoped to use it. Even in the city, the WiFi was only available in the reception area. For me, I lose a lot if I'm looking at my phone instead of looking at the person speaking, as I've come to rely pretty heavily on speech reading. Trying to glance at the speaker, then at the phone, increases my frustration and causes me to miss even more. For the time being, I "fixed" the problem by resigning from the tech group--not because of hearing issues but because the group cannot consider several of the greatest problems we need to solve. I just started working with a new effort that may accomplish more in the long run--at least, I hope so!

@joyces Sorry your experience is as you describe. Which were the greatest problems we need to resolve" or are they contained in what you have written here?

@normacarlson Hi Norma - when in doubt, google - which I just did. (I did not realize that it is the equivalent of Otter,(for Apple products) only for Android products. Check out this link I've included.

The speech to text apps help in some situations. Like you, I find it distracts me to watch my cell phone when I'm trying to hear someone speaking to me. A doctor's office is a good example. I realize how much I depend on speech reading. To have captions on teleconferencing, it has to be on the same screen I'm watching to benefit me. Google Meet has auto captions that are fairly accurate. For HLAA meetings, most chapters use Zoom with captions provided by a stenographer. That's expensive, but we raise funds and receive grants to cover the cost. Some chapters use Google Meet because of the free captions. We all hope that Zoom will start including this service soon. Please take time to let Zoom know this is important.

To answer barbb: The combo of trying to connect (and stay connected) to WiFi and confusion from watching the screen instead of speakers. On top of everything else, like all the speech-to-text apps I've tried, Live Transcribe fails with tech terms. Seeing an unexpected word on the phone (LT's best guess at the tech term used) takes more time to translate to what it should have been, while more words fly past. I finally set the phone aside and watched speakers. Again, these were very technical meetings, so it wasn't surprising that the apps failed to understand many terms. Because I was familiar with them, I could often "get" the tech stuff, missed more common words!

The entire process of filling in the blanks/guessing what's been said takes every brain cell we have. Sometimes even a half hour is too much...a 2-3 hour meeting is far, far more than I can track, let alone participate in. Some voices are quite clear, but others are really difficult. I need to communicate with one person almost daily who has a light voice and speaks fast, jumping from thought to thought. I try to e-mail her to avoid phone conversations. Right now, I'm stressed because I have a phone conference scheduled for tomorrow afternoon with two new people, one whom I've never heard via phone. Fortunately, the one I have heard is fairly easy to understand, but I doing some advance stress as this is not only tech talk, but from a different vantage point than what I've ever worked with before.

@normacarlson
Hello,
Live Transcribe is a speech to text app available on the Goggle play store. It is currently only available for Android phones. It can be
used anywhere, not just medical offices.
