Pretty much freaking out - labs

Posted by babette @babette, Sep 24, 2020

He everyone - I had labs drawn and my white could is 18,000. I've also suffered from dizziness lately. I'm having a differential blood draw tomorrow, late in the day so I'll suffer through the weekend. I'd really appreciate your responses to this. Are these likely symptoms of leukemia?

Hello @babette .
I can understand your concern over the high white blood count. Thinking the worst case scenario is often a problem. In looking at Mayo's' website I see there are other reasons for a high white blood count including infections as well as a response to certain meds. To put your mind at ease check out the lnk, https://www.mayoclinic.org/symptoms/high-white-blood-cell-count/basics/causes/sym-20050611.
I hope the reason for this result is something simple and that you can relax until you hear from your doctor with more information.

Hello @babette - I agree with Teresa’s comment that it could be anything at this point.

If you can, try to do things for yourself that can take your mind of of your situation. I found there is time enough to worry about things once they have been substantiated.

Can you do something to stay active?

Take and all the best.

Hi Babette, as humans, I swear we always look for the worse case scenarios as Teresa mentioned. There are so many reasons for a WBC to be high as it’s our body’s response mechanism kicking into overdrive when fighting an infection, a reaction to a virus, medications, arthritis, stress...many other things besides leukemia. Any inflammatory situation in one’s body can cause white blood counts to soar. Speculating until the results are in is so natural but often causes unnecessary worry. You have my empathy for having to possibly wait out the weekend for results! While difficult, distraction is the best medicine to get you through the waiting period. And, just for a bit of encouragement while your are worrying, I am a Leukemia survivor! ☺️ Sending positive vibes and wishing you all the best. Keep us posted. Hugs! Lori.

Thank you everyone! I know that my labs most likely indicate something other than leukemia but my emotions don't seem to know! I will take your advice, especially to be active this weekend! And I'll do my best to stay away from Google.
