Painful Pedicure Massage: Venous insufficiency?

Posted by bkvfuller @bkvfuller, Aug 26, 2020

I had a pedicure today and have noticed this before during a pedicure. When the lady does the massage on my lower right leg, it hurts all over where she is massaging. It is a sharp hurt and very uncomfortable. It is to the point I am considering discontinuing pedicures as it hurts so much. It only hurts while the massage is being done. Any thoughts would be most appreciated. To my knowledge, I have no varicose veins.

Hello @bkvfuller, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You will notice I changed the title of your discussion so that other members with similar experiences can share their thoughts and suggestions. There was an older discussion with the same topic started by @marmar56. I'm hoping the member is still following Connect and can offer some suggestions. I did find a reference to venous insufficiency as a possible cause..."Patients often relate to us that they used to love to get pedicures but now they don't enjoy them because the lower leg massage has become uncomfortable or painful. This pain can often be due to a medical condition known as venous insufficiency and is due to increased fluid accumulation in the calf muscles.Nov 30, 2018" -- Painful Pedicures? Here is some information from Cleveland Clinic on Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI): https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/16872-chronic-venous-insufficiency-cvi

Since you mentioned you do not have varicose veins, have you ever been checked for venous insufficiency or discussed the pain you have during a massage with your doctor?

Hello John and thank you for changing the heading/title of my post. I have never been told I have venous insufficiency and I have yet to discuss it with my doctor, but I will. Thanks for the information and your help.

Pedicure massage today extremely painful. Lessened but continued after. Recent leg vein ultasound, due to wound issues, showed saphenous vein issues among others. Ablation being discussed. Would this issue cause the pain?

Hi @mfh44, Welcome to Connect. I don't think @bkvfuller is still following Connect to see your post. We are patients like yourself and can only share our experiences and cannot provide medical advice. That said, since you mentioned that your doctors said your recent leg vein ultrasound showed saphenous vein issues and they were discussing an ablation it seems logical that a pedicure massage on the same leg with nerve issues could cause you pain.

Have you discussed the pain symptoms with your doctor yet?

Get pedicure & tell them not to massage above ankles. I had the same issue w tenderness when legs were massaged. —- I then found out at a later date I have venous insufficiency .
