Vitamin D

Been reading a bit about the lung-health promoting properties of Vit. D. Feel fortunate to be fully retired in Texas which affords plenty of “D” with zero reliance on supplements. Don

Hello,
Some medications and numerous medical conditions can lower vitamin D like Kidney & liver disease or you take anticonvulsants and also diabetes and many other medical conditions. I take anti-convulsant and when my level was first checked it was way down into the low single digits. I took 6000 units a day for quite some time and now I’m down to 2000 units. My mom was on thyroid medication and her doctor had her take 1000 mg a day.
Although it takes a lot for vitamin D to be toxic to your body the problem is that it makes you build up calcium in your blood which can be dangerous and may cause calcium kidney stones.
Here is some information on vitamin D toxicity from Mayo Clinic.

A lot of people think that if a little bits good a whole lot more is better which is not the case so if you do take vitamin D supplements do it wisely and ask your doctor.

@kayskid - While I was on the Big 3, my ID doc recommended 5000 iu per day of Vitamin D3 as I was also very low. Now that I am off antibiotics, I am waiting to have my levels checked with my next labs.
Like Don, I think I get plenty without the supplement by spending hours every day outdoors (well, maybe not in winter if we have to stay in the frozen north this year.) For anyone taking calcium supplements, adequate Vitamin D levels are crucial to being able to absorb it.

Thank you, Sue. I take 2000 now and that may not be enough. I try to spend a lot of time outdoors, but fall is coming and we live in Maine.

Hi,
Do you know what your vitamin D level is?
I don’t understand why your doctor wants you to take so much vitamin D. That amount is definitely not needed for the absorption of calcium. Are you taking medications that effect/deplete your vitamin D? 4,000IU is considered the daily maximum dose. I’m curious as to why your doctor wants you to take so much? if your vitamin D is extremely low I could understand it. I took 6000IU for some time then 2,000 once my level reached 60. I take three medications that interfere with vitamin D.

Best of luck,

Do you know what happened to my post above why it separated. The bottom one originally showed up normal then changed. Very strange.

Jake - Thanks for asking - my levels were checked just recently - now at 58, and D3 dose was reduced to 2000iu - they will monitor as it has run the gamut from 25 to 70 as my meds change. When I was on the big 3 plus large doses of NSAIDS, they were falling with every check. Currently only one med can cause absorption issues.

@jakedduck1, it's a mystery to me. It looks like making a paragraph break to insert the URL caused the issue, but why is beyond me. I'm glad that your message was complete. I removed the unnecessary duplications.
