Surgery during covid-19

Posted by guidant07 @guidant07, Jun 28, 2020

I am a 1981 kidney transplant recipient. On July 7 2020 I am scheduled to have knee replacement surgery at Rochester Methodist hospital. Listening to the news today covid-19 cases are starting to rise again along with my anxiety level! I am thinking about rescheduling. Any thoughts?

This newsfeed article was published this morning. It refers to organ donation in the face of a positive Hepatitis C situation in the donor. I believe it gives hope to those waiting for organs. What are your thoughts?

I was blessed to receive a liver transplant on 12.30.19. I had a biopsy performed last week. All went well. I'm in Va. Don't wait nervously for the other shoe to drop it all ready has you you survived.

@debyrichardson17 congratulations on your new liver. I too had a liver transplant in Dec 2019. Mine was on the 16th. God bless you that your 6 month follow up went well. Can I ask how much Prograf you are currently taking? Also, do you have any other medical issues like diabetes etc
? I moved to FL 2 years ago when I got married. Before then, I lived the DMV (lol) for 31yrs. Where abouts in VA do you live?

@debyrichardson17, Welcome to Mayo Connect. It is my honor to meet you and to join @tjgisewhite, in congratulating you on your liver transplant.
I am glad to hear that all went well for you. You have certainly had unique journey with transplant before COVID19, and now a post transplant biopsy that involved the extra safety protections. Do you think that you were extra nervous before the procedure because of COVID19? What would you say to someone to reassure them as they awaited an outpatient procedure? What made you feel the most safe and secure in the midst of this pandemic?

My faith. I have lived many years in fear and in denial. I'm a very calm person today. I know the hospital (UVA) TOOK EXTRA precautions because of my low immune system. I also live in southwest VA. I don't agree with all the diagnostic results to begin with. This virus is real and could totally take down someone like me but if you need a surgery to give you a better quality of life do it. GOD Bless.

@guidant07, I would like to send this as a virtual Get Well Card or a Thinking of You Card. Did you have you knee replacement surgery in July?

Hi Rosemary, Thank you so much for the get well card! I had the knee replacement on July 7 and it went very well. I am coming up on week six post surgery and everything is going well. Had a couple of bad pain days but got through it. This week I am weaning myself from using crutches I tried doing it on the third week and it was to early. Mayo staff was awesome!!! My wife stayed at the kahler and their staff was awesome too. Stay one night in Methodist hospital and home on the eighth.
Hope ał is weł with you,

@guidant07, This sounds great! I'm happy that everything has worked out well for you and for your wife. I agree that Mayo Methodist is a super place for medical care and the entire staff is amazing. Glad your wife was able to stay nearby and was well cared for, too.
All is well with me because all is well with my liver and kidney! Thanks for asking.

Since my transplant, I find that it takes me longer to heal. Did your anti-rejection medications have any effect on the procedure? Or your healing time?
