I haven't had much luck, they definitely said tmj but haven't had any info about my salivary glad. I've been to 4 different doctors already and now they want to see a orthodontist that specializes in tmi, which I can't afford, they've already taken 3 teeth for no reason

@thuts6818 I wish I could help. I have always had an overactive saliva gland. When we were stationed at Ft Sill Oklahoma eons ago where they trained dentist for the Army. Usually during my exam they would have the trainee press on my saliva gland. Of course the trainee's face would get covered in saliva. I did not think it was funny and asked them to prepare the trainee if they wanted to do it and ask me before hand. I don't mind helping people learn, but no need to put them or patient in an embarrassing moment.

My pain does not get worse when the saliva gland gets more active. .. but it does get more active when my jaw goes out of alignment.

I have heard of saliva gland stones and tumors. I assume they have checked for those.

@lillypaws. Thank you for the blessings. I live in northwest Indiana, any farther North I'd be in lake Michigan. It definitely no fun being in pain 24/7. It's been so bad mentally and physically that I've thought about taking my own life more than I'd like to admit. I'm on disability so I'm also on a fixed budget with many other issues. That's why appreciate your blessings...they help

@thuts6818 I understand about the thoughts of taking one's own life. I have been there. I took a med for a year and a half or so, but then the thoughts started coming back. I slowly went off the med. I felt better. I let my doctor know how I am doing. Most times I am okay. .. but sometimes all the physical pain causes some mental pain.

My prayers are uplifted for you.

prednisone usually helps when the salivary gland is infected, it is possible that your glands have stones, does it hurt mostly when you eat something?

@val1980, thanks for your advice, I have had that checked by an ENT, he thinks it's the salivary gland any THJ.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS, they help more than you know....

@lilypaws .. most of the time there is no pain.. just when it catches and won't close. Sometimes I will get a bad headache and then I realize my jaws are out of alignment. When that happens I usually put my fingertips at the jaw joint and move my lower jaw around until I fill a pop and I check my bite and if it doesn't feel right I repeat until it does. Most of the time
I don't feel the alignment off.. I will have a headache much like a migraine. I just have to pay attention to how the headache is as to what is causing it. I tend to have migraine headaches and headaches from a bad neck. I also have Trigeminal neuralgia which can cause jaw pain... feels different than tmj.

@@fourof5zs Do you wear a night guard to wear at night? For your headaches have you seen a Neurologist? They had a great one I saw at Mayo. Take care. I hope it gets better. Blessings.

@thuts6818 I sleep well most nights. My psychiatrist gave me Ambien, Konopin and a muscle relaxant, so sleep comes pretty easy. I'm so tired my the end of the day. Yes, it is bad mentally, I have been mostly anxious, but today I am depressed. I did try to commit suicide once. I will never do it again. Bless you! Be strong and think of 3 good things every day. I'm so sad you have been so bad mentally and physically. What is your Physical problem?

@thuts6818 You indicate that you cannot afford to go to a TMJ specialist. Would it be possible to have this paid for by Medicaid or something like that?
Another option is going to a School of Dentistry. I live in southern NH and I know of people who have gone to Boston to one of the Schools of Dentistry (Tufts, probably Harvard too) to get major work done very reasonably. Boston is about 55 miles away from here, it takes a couple of hours to get there during the day generally due to traffic, but obviously it is worth it if it makes having that work done possible.
The other very odd option I have heard of is going to Mexico! Dental work there is much less expensive than taking the flights to a border town, walking across the border, and staying a couple of nights. I do not know of anyone personally who has done this but my sister knew someone who did and who said the dental work was good. Frankly, I cannot imagine doing this myself, but I know it is done.

@fourof5zs Your pain sounds very similar to what I used to experience. I was often able to manipulate my jaw to get things back in alignment, but sometimes I just had to be patient and wait.
That really is terrible that they would put you and a dental intern through an embarrassing moment as they did. Among other things, it risks spreading infection, so it's particularly bad. We are more conscious of germs now, but there has been a huge consciousness about them every since AIDS came on the scene. I guess if your experience was prior to this perhaps there it was less so.

I am sorry being so long in answering. I did not realize that messages from Connect were going to junk mail until yesterday when I had not gotten the newsletter. I dug through junk mail. ugh!

We had not had a dentist that dealt with tmj in my town or neaby. I looked again after I had posted and we now have one. On his website he says he specializes in tmj and mentioned the treatments. Maybe .. if this covid-19 ever calms in my town I will go see him.

I used to grind my teeth up into my mid 20s and managed to stop on my own. My husband says I don't grind my teeth. I ask him ever once in awhile.

I have gone to a local neurologist with my migraine and neuralgia. I was allergic to one medication and another I couldn't tolerate the side effects. I had so much going on with my Mama that I did not go back. I really hate taking medications... they don't always play well together with me and often do the opposite of what they are suppose to do. I make doctor's scratch their heads a lot. 😁
