New and ... feeling dread and unease of the times

Posted by robbie1956 @robbie1956, Apr 30, 2020

Hi, I’m new to the Mayo Clinic forums...like all, very aware of the times and I am very uncertain about everything....even trips to the store are laced with a feeling of unease...we wear masks and gloves, but sometimes at night I wake up with a feeling of dread..
The old line out of the Ancient Mariner comes to mind,
“Like one who on a lonesome road does walk in fear and dread, because he knows a frightful fiend does close behind him tread”...so glad to become a part of this forum...too much isolation....

Welcome to Connect, @robbie1956. Great to see you here. What brings you to Mayo Connect? I liked the word you used...."unease". That is the way most of us feel at least part of the time. It is difficult to deal with uncertainty even for the Ancient Mariner.

What brought you to our community of members and mentors, moderators, and caregivers? Our vision is to improve the quality of life for all of the Mayo Connect members of which there are more than 90,000. We cannot diagnose or prescribe. Our medical education comes from sharing our own experiences with others who have walked our path.

How would you like to begin??????
Be content and at ease,
Chris

I was guided here by some dedicated people from previous discussion groups....I had read their situations and their courage.
I found it was something I needed to be a part of.....I am retired and every time I put on masks and gloves to go to the store,
I feel like I am part of any number of sci-fi pictures from the past....and I used the words unease because I just couldn’t think of anything else..it is a feeling of unease....and in the early wee hours, when I’m awake, it seems to be very gripping.....at least for awhile....then it subsides.....like most of us, I have my share of medical problems and don’t wish to catch this awful thing...
At times I feel isolated and lonely...I know of others who are the same way, some too afraid to even go outside....
Thanks so much for the warm welcome, and I will monitor this discussion group...so glad it is here, and thank you Chris.

Hi@robbie1956, Here's another welcome and also a thank you for both the fitting line from the Ancient Mariner for these uncertain times and also for your use of the word, "unease" which best describes the discomfort I feel at times but haven't been able to come up with a better word. "Unease" is that vague dread that briefly descends out of nowhere sometimes without any immediately definitive cause and then passes when I recognize it as the covid culprit just bedeviling my peace of mind. Looking forward to getting better acquainted. There are many sub-threads like walking, just want to talk, gardenng, visual escapes and other interests where we can share and support one another. Regardless of our various health issues, we are all experiencing new challenges during this time of uncertainty. Welcome aboard.

Thanks, and I will keep in touch with this discussion group....us, unease has worked it’s way into people’s lives these days.
I am grateful that it comes, and then let’s up when I get going a bit....I try not to listen to the TV and Radio a lot...it’s too much of the same, even when it’s an update....but this Mayo Clinic forum with it’s discussion and topic groups is a nice place to be these days....thanks for your warm welcome......🙂

Very apt simile. And that was something that I thought nothing of in the good old, bad old days of my youth!

Unease - what a great descriptor for the feeling these days! We just traveled 3 days cross country from winter to summer home, and I worried, fretted and planned for weeks. Phew! We are home - with awe at how many are ignoring the issues of social distancing, face covering, cleaning... 3 days of truck stops and rest areas, 2 motels - thankfully we had all our own food. I have great admiration for those facing the public and praying to stay well.
Now we will quarantine for 2 weeks in our still closed down state, then try to figure out when we'll feel comfortable beginning to move around.
