Your weight and your CA 27.29 reading

Posted by sandyjr @sandyjr, Apr 26, 2020

The following the first time I had BC, my tumor markers were normal. Fast forward 11 years and weight gain and a second BC experience...invasive not in situ and other breast this time. My CA 27.29 has been consistently in the 40s instead of 38 and below. In the last couple months I have lost 15 lbs and my CA27.29 went to 38 from 44 since the January test. Could there be any correlation? I would like to hear from other ladies that may have experienced this.

Hello @sandyjr,

I can tell that you are concerned about the increase in CA 27.29 as it might relate to the increase in your weight. That is certainly understandable as well as wise. While I've never had breast cancer myself, I did a little research. Listed below is an article from the American Cancer's website about how to lower your risk for breast cancer progressing. As you read this article you will see that maintaining a healthy weight is one of those factors. Here is the link, https://www.cancer.org/cancer/breast-cancer/living-as-a-breast-cancer-survivor/can-i-lower-my-risk-of-breast-cancer-progressing-or-coming-back.html/ I hope that other breast cancer survivors on Connect are able to share with you about your question as well.

If I may ask, have you talked with your oncologist about this increase in your CA 27.29?

I'm glad to hear that you will have an appointment to talk with your doctor tomorrow, @sandyjr. I'm sure that you need some reassurance about this.

Will you post an update when you have the opportunity?

My tumor marker also has elevated in the last 6 months-I am at the end of 5 yrs on arimidex for Stage 2 and had a rapid weight gain after I took 2 doses of Prolia so I stopped that. I will now work harder to get weight off and can’t wait for warmer weather, my gym to be able to re-open in 3 weeks (COVID 19). I am a semi-retired nurse that researches everything to death. I used Venlafaxine for the massive hot flashes and it worked perfectly.

Hi @sandyjr, I was thinking about you and wondering how your phone appointment went. Did you get any answers to your concerns about the increase in your CA27.29?

I did not have an increase in the CA 27.29… I had a decrease and I thought maybe it could’ve been from the weight loss. He was delighted to hear that I had lost weight but was noncommittal on the weight-loss affecting the reading. I had an excellent appointment with him. He explained a lot of stuff about the surgery and what I need and what I don’t need. He is not affiliated with my surgeons In anyway and wants me to give him complete reports of everything as it happens. I really like this man. He loves what he does. Thank you for asking

Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, @nanaof3. Were you prescribed Prolia for osteoporosis due to Arimidex? Are you taking a different medication instead? Exercise is of course helpful for bone health too (as you know).

What COVID-19 precautions will you take when returning to the gym?

It’s Planet Fitness and machine wise- I clean before and after- my plan is to social distance, mask and bike gloves or hand sanitizer and they are good about publishing peak times- which I avoid. I will walk more than go there when it is warmer.
I am a part time Hospice nurse and I work Mothers Day as my first day back and will wear an N 95 there.
Prolia was for Osteopenia and it made me more tender all over, no energy, backache, joint pain and just no desire to do anything - so I chose to increase Vit D instead and good old sunshine.
