Divot (or Dent) in Thigh, Five Months After Giving Birth

Good morning All,

I gave birth five months ago to a healthy baby boy. Yesterday, I noticed a divot, maybe three inches long and one inch high, on my right thigh. I've had right hip pain for years and sometimes see a chiropractor to get it sorted out when it gets too bad. It was fine through pregnancy and isn't acting up too much now. I was shocked because I never noticed this before. It's almost a perfect palm rest. Is this something that can happen after birth? Is the fat on my body just shifting? I started walking again, trying to get 10,000 steps per day, and was wondering if maybe that was the cause? The left leg doesn't have the same thing. Everything I googled was terrifying, but I have no foot cramps/electric shock.

Thank you

First you should talk to your physician who is familiar with you.As a retired Physical Therapist, I sometimes noticed DEPRESSIONS in the upper leg on patients, who did not have it earlier, when I saw them before. A branch of a nerve had been compromised and the resultant muscle area atrophied. You said divot and I am interpreting this as an indentation. Usually there was mild weakness ,but not always. So, ckeck with the Physician who is familiar with you.Lying in a compressed position for an extended position, when pregnant could be the cause.

Hi there, I have the SAME thing, and am also 5 months post giving birth. Have you found any answers? I noticed mine about two weeks ago and have an appointment this week with my Doctor regarding it.

Compression on a small amount of nerves. May regenerate at 1/2" a month after compression source ? is found. I am a retired Physical therapist. Check out your resting posture habits since child delivery. i.e.nursing on side, etc surface etc. It is a detective story about how a small distribution of nerves to a muscle distribution is interrupted. UNLESS this is happening elsewhere. Then,it might be something for a neurologist to look at.

I'm praying your outcome is good! Mine was. Because there was nothing in the divot (couldn't feel anything) and I started noticing it on the other leg a few days later, my nurse practicioner sent me in search of whatever I may have been coming in contact with. Turns out I was jamming my leg into the super sharp (Why sharp? no idea) corner of the diaper changing station to wrangle my wiggly baby. After csection my core is a bit week and I hadn't realized I was doing that. It lined up exactly with the divot. It hasn't improved since I stopped doing that, but it also hasn't gotten worse.

Nerves regenerate about 1/4 inch a month....not over night. Sorry for you distress but better days ahead.

Thank you both so much for your replies! Dr and PT agree nothing too serious, working with PT on it!

My wonderful mother had this as well. After giving birth to six girls within eight years and she carried that mark with her as a trophy for the rest of her life!
