COVID-19: Grocery Shopping and Take Out Food

Posted by Teresa, Volunteer Mentor @hopeful33250, Mar 26, 2020

Most likely when/if we need to buy groceries we always wipe down the cart handles with an antiseptic wipe. However, how do you protect yourself when you bring those groceries into your home? I just viewed this video from a physician in Grand Rapids, Michigan who offers some suggestions. Perhaps you will not find all of these suggestions helpful or practical, but I learned a lot. Here is the link to this YouTube video,

Hopeful, thank you so much for your effort. I'm not very computer savvy so it may be something I just don't know how to do. Thanks again.

What you might do is go to Youtube.com and then when you get to the Youtube website, use their search engine and put the title or the doctor's name in the search engine and see if it will come up. Then go to the top of the video display and you should be able to pick up the link. It's worth a try.

Unfortunately my garage is not attached to my condo, so leaving it outside is difficult because it's been raining. We do have rabbits and squirrels around. I used to have a family of possums living under my deck. I don't have the luxury of leaving any food outside for a few days!

@mayofeb2020 When I had my groceries delivered she left them outside my door I live in a senior building but I had my Lysol wipes ready and wiped them down handles first then rest before I brought them in. Help any?

My question is how to handle fresh produce. My daughter is sending me fresh veggies directly from local farmers. I'm going to have cauliflower, kale, bok choy, apples, oranges, and spinach. If they are not packed wrapped in plastic, do I have to wash them with soap and hot water? Would this ruin the veggies?

@mayofeb2020 When I get fresh produce if its not organic I not only wash it good with water but put it in a white vinegar water solution for awhile then rinse it off I do this before I consume it . Strawberries need to soak in this solution for at least 15 minutes to get the pesticides off.

Mayofeb, I've purchased my last fresh veggies and fruits for awhile. Absolutely just an oldie and no expert but I did wash/soak everything first in lukewarm, Dawn detergent water; rinsed in cool water; let it dry before storing. I am cooking fresh veggies and fruits just as a precaution hoping the cooking heat will further kill bacteria.

Good tips, @lioness, especially about the soaking of the strawberries.

Thanks, John. I saw that "Share" but didn't know how it could be used. Once again you saved the day for those of us who are not high-techs!
