Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@merpreb No "if you lose them". It will be "when I lose them!"

Hi Ginger,
You should be thin as a rail with all the yard work you do.
By the way have you thought of planting a money tree? Those $1,000.00 bills come in handy.
Mayofeb2020 money tree is not a good bloomer.
Well, back to my exercise. I do MyPen exercises. Kind of expensive, but I’ve been doing
MyPen exercises for years.
Very windy south of the boarder today.(California and Oregon state line).
Take care,
Funcountess

@funcountess I am good for about 2 hrs a day for yardwork. Then either hip or knee starts to remind me of their discomfort.

I find walking to be so therapeutic, and this time of year, the way the neighbors are sprucing up their yards helps distract me from how far I have gone, or any negative thoughts running in my head. They are about ready to announce fire season is in effect, so there is a lot of last minute brush clearing.

Okay, you will have to explain MyPen exercises.

Wow, everyone - I am pumped this morning. I just took a close look at my fitness tracker. On May 9th, I decided to walk to Amana, Iowa. Since then I have walked 155 miles - before our walking group, I was walking 2 miles a day around the house and yard, or about 60 miles per month. So by my calculations, in the past month I have walked 95 miles toward my destination or 3 miles per day. Amana is 268 miles from my home, so I only have 171 miles to go! I guess I won't make it by 4th of July, so I'm going to try for August first.
How is everyone else doing on their trip?

That is grand, congratulations👏🏼 It's so nice when there is real progress, at whatever distance or length of time!! August is a great goal to keep. You can do it!!!
I decided that walking an hour each day was my goal and most days I don't track it. It is a lot of hilly upward movement and I find more peace of mind just admiring others floral and garden beds without the tracker on. I took a pontoon ride on the Mississippi River yesterday, so in some respects, I made my goal. LOL
Now my walk to the Mississippi will continue as my motivation continues!

@lioness.. I know Lakewood! Many decades ago, I lived in Long Beach, and work at the round building on Ocean Blvd. We used to go to Lakewood alot. It's so hot here today, in the 90s. I went walking at 9 and was sweating like a hog when I got home.

@mayofeb2020 Yes I know the building on Ocean Blvd I left at 8 this morning and it was starting to really get warm by 9:30 when I came back. Days like this I try not to go out but while I was waiting for Michael to pick me up I went for my walk seemed so funny no cars in the parking lot of that mall. Did you ever do anything about getting that adjustable bed?

Fiesty76,
I think you are getting your towns of Lakewood mixed up.
Lakewood is in California also. More towards the southern part of Los Angeles county.
There are probably many Lakewood’s in multiple states.
Maybe when mentioning a city, we should also mention the state.
