Spondylitis

Anyone here with severe back issues? So far hubby has had laminectomy of L4-L5 and right side sacroiliac fusion but no relief 🙁 our next step is to visit the Mayo clinic.

@tyeguy1, Oh my goodness, good evening. I had to read that sentence several times....then I said, "Oh it couldn't be". However....those surgeries are eactly what I went through years ago. The first one, the laminectomy was supposed to be a fixer. Not quite. 10 years later my life came to a halt while I had the fusion you mentioned. And when I was released he told me....see you again in another 10 years. That's just the way these things go.

It took energy to fight that precognition. I read and researched. I started walking and doing special back exercises....just two or three every single day after my shower. Are you ready to this.......in this 77-year-old body there is no back pain....no bone spurs, no arthritis (at least not in the back.)

I have done 40 and 50-mile inn to inn walks around the world, I survived the Grand Canyon hike and the Austrian Alps Olympic bobsled run. I may even have won a boot-scooting dance contest along the way.

I don't know how old your hubby is so that might be a factor. Be careful to do exactly as your surgeon and physical therapy clinicians tell you. It was my lovely yoga teacher and personal trainer Kate who told me to stick with her and I would never need surgery again. We have now been friends for 20 years and I am holding her to it.

Have a lovely evening and restful sleep. Chris

That is amazing Chris! What a great story. My hubby is 49 and had a horrible accident at work 4 years ago that has disabled him. It has been a nightmare. He has the most terrible pain from arthritis, degenerative disc disease and stenosis to name a few issues. We have not found the right treatment yet 🙁 Hoping for good results with Mayo so he can have quality life again. There is always hope! Have a good night.

@tyeguy1, That story sounds like it just cannot be true. When is your appointment at Mayo? Let me know if you need visiting information.

And as we say goodnight I am going to share something else about this relationship we have in common and which no one knows on Connect. My first name is Evelyn. Sleep well. Chris

It does sound to good to be true. I never had a surgery but know quite a few Friends who went thru very similar surgeries & 1 of my best girlfriends had a laminectomy, & fusion & she was very athletic & also age 24when she had her surgeries. But I guess we are all different, & all I know is what I have seen & heard from my close friends who have all said & gone thru these type of surgeries almost all of them have bone spurs if not worse, most of them are always complaining about their backs hurting even worse since their surgeries. There are very few if any ppl who I have heard say their bodies are cured. Maybe the mind is stronger than the PAIN, for some people. But unfortunately it is usually not the case with most people who have undergone those types of surgeries.

If you feel great, that is amazing for you. But most chronic pain that stems from herniated disc's & spondylitis are not so simple & we all feel/perceive pain differently & so are our treatments. Even medications work differently for us all. It's not a 1 size fits all. I'm happy are feeling soo great as a result of your many walks from Inn to Inn & Bobsleds. Best Wishes to you & be happy.

I have severe spondylitishesis sp. and spinal stenosis. I cannot stand up straight sometimes. It has effected my left leg where I cannot stand on toes or lift my heel. with weight on that foot. It also has atropathy. .It has been this way for a couple of years and now. I have had so many tests and now the Neurosurgeon finally says he think he can help me. I don't hurt all of the time, but I don't walk right even with special shoes. The surgery would be putting small rods in L4 L5 and cleaning out where the nerves are. He said major surgery and I would be in hospital 4-5 days. I'm really scared, but I 'm afraid it will only get worse. I have done therapy and just about everything else and I am not any better. I'm 73 and I want to be able to enjoy the golden years.Has anyone had this surgery?? My husband and friends feel I should do it.
