Home remedies

Posted by stuckonu @stuckonu, Nov 3, 2019

Is it cultural that some people use and believe in what is sometimes called home remedies?
I’m afraid to name a particular culture because it may be taken out of context and or labeled an *...ist of some kind.
I think another problem with talking about one of Grandmas cures is that it can be seen as “ practicing medicine without a license.”
I think of home remedies as a separate reality which some my recognize as the title of a book about “ seeing things in a different light “

@stuckonu What we take for granted these days with ease of access to remedies in the drugstores, and stores in general, was not always the case. And it was a distance to any store or merchantile anyways, not to mention having enough coinage to purchase something. Remedies were made from what is on hand. Some worked, some didn't. Personally, I think there is much value in the "old" remedies.

@gingerw . I'm in agreement with you. I've always mixed eastern, western, grandmother's remedies, and everything I can think of. Medicine as we know it is new.

I pull with coconut oil daily which can also help with dry mouth for those with this problem. I pull while I shower and go about morning chores.

I discovered that coconut oil spray used for cooking works better for me than biotin and keep a can in my night table for a little squirt if I wake up before I’m ready to get out of bed. I told my dentist and he’s trying to can it in a smaller container and market it. I suggested that he flavor them. If you see it in the drugstore someday you heard it here first.

Hi,
Think about all the great home remedies that people mentioned here like coconut oil, ginger, baking soda,...and go to the stores and what do you see but a vast array of these items in products everywhere. Everyone jumped on the “natural” bandwagon and are now selling it for 10 times what you can make it for without the additives and stabilizers. I love to browse DIY hacks on the internet. Some work and some don’t. @parus mentioned coconut oil for dry mouth.
I never thought of that and I cook with coconut oil and made a coconut oil and liquid Vitamin E moisturizer that I still use. Ginger is amazing for stomach upsets.

Abreeva, which is an expensive cold sore remedy is a great pimple slayer...works overnight. Apple cider vinegar and water is a great ear rinse.

I think we should start a DIY and hack discussion and everyone can tell us about their own home remedies. I am going to start trying the coconut oil spray for dry mouth. I have a pantry full of vinegars and oils.

I clean my 2 inch white blinds with dryer sheets. What else do you guys do?

This is fun. Thanks for bring it into the light.

FL Mary
