Long lasting periods

Posted by katb13 @katb13, Oct 26, 2019

So I am currently on day 13 of my period. Last night I started to feel weak in my legs, nauseous, and even felt some pain in my lower abdomen near the public bone area. I woke up and still felt all of that and have felt it all day today as well. I'm only 18 years old. I'm starting to really worry that it's something serious.

@katb13 Hi and welcome to Connect. I am Carol, a retired teacher of 45 years, and I am a Diabetic 2. I am responding to your post because you are so young to have these problems and in order to know what is going on, I always think seeing a specialist is the best way to start. Do you have a gynecologist? If not, I would check and find one. Do you live at home? Is your mother aware of your situation? If you were older, there might be a reason for the length of your periods; however, as young as you are, you need to see a doctor instead of just trying to outlast the long days and nights of bleeding. I am not a doctor or medically trained, but as a woman, I don't think this is usual for a monthly period. Your Primary doctor or a gynecologist is the person you need to see. They can run some tests and talk with you about your situation and help you get back to normal. Have your periods always been as many days? There could be something simple that is causing your problem. But, whatever is going on, you need to know. I hope you will see a doctor as soon as possible and get some answers. If you feel comfortable sharing, will you let me know what you find out?

Hello! Yes, I talked to my mom about it so she is aware. Unfortunately I do not live at home since I'm at college, but it's only 2 hours away which isn't that bad. I definitely will be checking to find a gynecologist to talk to. My last one lasted 11 days so that is why I'm worrying a little more. Usually they aren't this long. And of course! Thank you!!

@katb13 That sounds like a good plan. I'm glad your mom knows, and I hope you can get in to see a doctor as soon as possible. You have two options. You can find a gynecologist in your college town or you can go home and find one in your hometown. As a college girl, you know that you need to find out what's going on. Don't procrastinate. Just think how much better you will feel if you have a normal period. That is a good reason to know. If you want to "talk," I will be here, so any time during the day or early evening is fine. I look forward to hearing from you. And just think; there may be other women in a similar situation and you can help them by taking action for yourself and sharing.

@katb13 great advice from @retiredteacher, she is right. I too am glad that your mother is aware of your situation, I have a daughter, now in her 30s, but she does generally share most medical things with me and I think that’s good for her too.
As Carol said, since you are close to home you do have the option of going to a doctor either there or in your college town. If you are close with your mom you might want her there with you.
I think some young people sometimes do have more problems so it is probably/hopefully nothing to be too concerned about. I have heard of young women being prescribed birth control pills to regulate their periods, that might be an option.

@katb13 I agree with what has been said it is unusual to have periods to last that long . You are losing so much blood that's why you feel those symptoms Please go to a gyn she or he needs to check you out to find out why you are having those periods good suggestion by contentandwell to take your Mom with you if you see someone at home

Agree with previous posts about seeing a gynecologist with your mom. I had a time of long periods which was the cause of fibroids, but once that issue was dealt with all was back to normal.

@katb13 Scanning my posts and wonder if you have been able to get an appointment with a gynecologist concerning the length of your periods. How are you doing? Please don't procrastinate; that's just avoiding the cause. You need to find out why and get answers. Will you let us know when you get a professional diagnosis?

@katb13 Checking through posts and don't see a response concerning the length of your periods. Were you able to get an appointment and answers for your situation? I hope you did get a diagnosis and have become regular so that you aren't dealing with abnormally long periods. I have been thinking about you and hope you are back to normal.
